Overview of Lake Minnetonka Vacation Rentals
Lake Minnetonka Vacation Rentals are Rural Retreats Just Minutes Away From the Twin Cities
Located 20 miles west of Minneapolis-St. Paul, Lake Minnetonka is considered the suburbs of the Twin Cities. In the native Dakota language, it means Big Water. And, with a conservative estimate of 125 miles of coastline, it is well named. Its location makes it exceptionally convenient for Minneapolis-St. Paul International Airport, and has excellent major roads leading to and around the lake.
Originally created by glacial melting during the last Ice Age, this area was inhabited by a variety of Native American tribes before its discovery in 1822. Here, in the area known as Mound, there remain the signs of ancient Native American burial sites. The turn of the 20th century brought the railroad and steamboats and the area has attracted attention ever since.
Winter, Spring, Summer and Fall are Perfect Times to Visit Lake Minnetonka Lake Houses
Lake Minnetonka vacation rentals are located in various towns around the lake, such as Big Island. Here, visitors will enjoy the Big Island Nature Park where the natural environment is preserved to offer a variety of recreational activities. Just 20 minutes from downtown Minneapolis is the delightful city of Excelsior, a unique city mixing historic areas with modern convenience. It has interesting stores, restaurants and a theater. Here, the Southwest Regional Light Rail Transit Trail is a popular area for biking and hiking. The area also has a great beach for swimming, tennis courts, baseball diamonds, and playgrounds with picnic facilities. The city of Minnetrista has a wonderful large upland pond which is great for swimming. There is also a fishing pier and boat launch area. First settled in 1853, the city of Orono boasts interesting shopping and a friendly country club with an excellent nine-hole golf course. Many visitors will still enjoy the cruises around the lake, just as the first vacationers here over 150 years ago did.
When winter comes, so do skiers, snowboarders, and many more for the huge variety of winter sports on offer in the region. There are many cross country skiing trails, sledding, ice staking, ice climbing, and even snow golf!
So Much to do at Lake Minnetonka Vacation Rentals
A vacation to Lake Minnetonka lake houses would not be complete without a trip to see the Twin Cities, Minneapolis-St. Pauls. Here visitors will want to make their way to the Mall of America in Bloomington. It is the biggest mall in America; it would be a shame not to experience its hundreds of stores. For a theater trip, the Gutherie Theater is an impressive modern building with performances almost daily. Even if you can’t stay for a performance, the building itself is worth a visit. The 100-year-old Cathedral of St. Paul is considered one of the most impressive cathedrals in the country, inspired by French renaissance churches. One of the most impressive trips here is one to the historic military area of Fort Snelling. Located on a high bluff overlooking Minneapolis and St. Paul, it is the state’s oldest building. There are a variety of great trips for families, such as the Minnesota Zoo, Children’s Museum, Science Museum and Firefighters Museum; you could also take them to see the wild birds at the Raptor Center.
