  • We thoroughly enjoyed this home

"My sisters and I spent several nights in this charming home. The place was beautifully clean, and very welcoming. The architecture was noteworthy, and we enjoyed all the extra touches in the home's design and furnishings. The cottage was just as described. Nights were quiet and restful. We were able to drive to Canal Park in only a few minutes. This was a first trip to Duluth for one of us, and we took in much of what I like to think of as characteristic of Duluth. We enjoyed a boat cruise, Glensheen tour, Gooseberry Falls, and Skyline Drive. The Seven Bridges road was closed while we were there, but we were able to get to the first bridge easily before the closure. Of course, Mexican food at Little Angie's on Canal Park was on our agenda too. This Hillside Cottage provided a peaceful respite at days end. Thanks for sharing your home with us."

  • LOVED IT

"This house exceeded our expectations. It is more spacious and new inside than we thought it would be. Our group of 14, 8 adults and 6 children, had plenty of room to be together or to spread out. We were pleased to find two washers and two dryers, plenty of kitchen and bathroom supplies, beautiful artwork, and many other thoughtful touches that made us feel we were in someone's home, not just a sterile rental property. The lake location made for many mosquitoes, but we were prepared with spray and bug-shield clothing. The kids loved kayaking and canoeing on the lake. It was still a little too cold for swimming, but we had so much else to do. We visited the towns and state parks along the north shore all the way up to the border as well as playing games inside with the kids. Thanks, Brian and Lisa, for making this house available."

  • Our special wedding day

"We were looking for a great place to have an outside wedding up in the North Shore area. After finding pictures on the internet, we contacted the owners of the Grand Retreat, to see if they allowed it. They did indeed, in fact they offered us a weekend to check it out ahead of time. We fell in love with the place. But because it was in December, we really couldn't scope out the land as well. So in June, when my family and I were camping in Schroeder, I asked if we could check out the property again to get a feel for the wedding layout. They aloud us to another quick visit, when there was no occupancy. When I asked for recommendations for an officient, and about catering options, they were right on it. I had answers right away, or within a day if they weren't sure. When the time grew closer to our wedding date, they were in constant contact with us offering any help we needed. Our wedding day ended up being beautiful! We created great memories in this beautiful place, with great outside pictures along the creek and wilderness type settings. The cabin was very spacious for the whole crowd and for all of us to sleep. Our family, relatives and friends were very impressed with the Grand Retreat. During our week stay, we enjoyed both indoor and outdoor fires. We enjoyed sitting on the deck over looking the back yard, listening to the sound of the creek. We also did plenty of exploring in the surounding areas. We even drove up to the border and found the beautiful waterfall of the Pigeon River, in the Grand Portage State Park. I can't wait until we can visit again. I very much recommend a family stay or even a special event here. Thanks again for the great stay here!!"
