When visitors arrive at Ely cottages, they find out why it is known as "the end of the road." Getting here is best by car. The major airports are at Minneapolis, which is about a five-hour drive or Duluth which is two hours away by car. Once here, there are good primary roads and the secondary roads are gravel or dirt. It is a beautiful area with four distinct seasons, including hot summers and cold, snowy winters.

Ely Lake Houses Are Perfect for an Outdoor Vacation

The town of Ely is in the heart of the Superior National Forest. One of the major attractions by Ely vacation rentals is the renowned Echo Trail, on St. Louis County Road 166. This former logging road is the main access to the lake area of the Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness. This road is 72 miles of asphalt and gravel, referred to as a "roller coaster." Along the road are trailheads and boat launching areas. There is a side road off Echo Trail leading to Crane Lake where visitors are treated to an amazing panorama of dark forest, rivers, lakes, wetlands and granite crags. This is one of the remotest areas in the country where visitors come in summer for hiking, biking, canoeing, kayaking and fishing. In winter, it is a fantastic area for skiing, snowshoeing and much more. In winter, the area is particularly well known as a snowmobiling area. Wildlife in the region includes bears, beaver, moose, and wolves. Among the birds to spot here are both bald eagles an osprey.

There are a huge number of trails in the area. Among the most popular is Bass Lake Trail at just over five miles around the lake. Another is Angleworm Trail which is a loop trail around the lakes of Angleworm, Home and Whiskey Jack. This is a 14-mile trail through rugged terrain with great views. It is a good area to spot the local moose. Located some 20 miles from Ely is Secret/Blackstone Trail where hikers can enjoy the waterfalls hidden around the trail. At Miners Lake, visitors can hike the Trezona Trail, where visitors can trace the mining history of the area along the trail.

Visit Ely and Visit Lily, the World-Famous Bear

The area is also home to the International Wolf Center and visitors may enjoy taking a day out to learn more about these elusive creatures. Close by is also the North American Bear Center, famed for Lily the Bear who was the first bear ever to give birth with a worldwide audience watching via her own webcam! At Soudan Underground Mine State Park, there are guided tours taking visitors 2,400 feet into the mysterious world of mining. Here, visitors will learn more about the vital economic impact of mining on the area.

In the town of Ely is the Dorothy Molter Museum, consisting of two long cabins. The cabins were transported from their original location deep in the Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness to the town. They are a memorial to the Wilderness area’s last permanent resident, Dorothy Molter. Until her death in 1986, Dorothy welcomed visitors to her home on Knife Lake, providing refreshment and hospitality to weary canoeists. Locals and visitors alike knew Dorothy as "the Root Bear Lady."
