  • Our special wedding day

"We were looking for a great place to have an outside wedding up in the North Shore area. After finding pictures on the internet, we contacted the owners of the Grand Retreat, to see if they allowed it. They did indeed, in fact they offered us a weekend to check it out ahead of time. We fell in love with the place. But because it was in December, we really couldn't scope out the land as well. So in June, when my family and I were camping in Schroeder, I asked if we could check out the property again to get a feel for the wedding layout. They aloud us to another quick visit, when there was no occupancy. When I asked for recommendations for an officient, and about catering options, they were right on it. I had answers right away, or within a day if they weren't sure. When the time grew closer to our wedding date, they were in constant contact with us offering any help we needed. Our wedding day ended up being beautiful! We created great memories in this beautiful place, with great outside pictures along the creek and wilderness type settings. The cabin was very spacious for the whole crowd and for all of us to sleep. Our family, relatives and friends were very impressed with the Grand Retreat. During our week stay, we enjoyed both indoor and outdoor fires. We enjoyed sitting on the deck over looking the back yard, listening to the sound of the creek. We also did plenty of exploring in the surounding areas. We even drove up to the border and found the beautiful waterfall of the Pigeon River, in the Grand Portage State Park. I can't wait until we can visit again. I very much recommend a family stay or even a special event here. Thanks again for the great stay here!!"

  • Absolutely Wonderful!

"This was a fabulous place to stay, and I would highly recommend it to anyone with a large family (or two or three families) because it was perfect. Everyone has their own bedroom, and there are a couple of shared family rooms, cozy fireplaces and a deck to gather on. The kitchen was well equipped and for us it was so convenient to have breakfast every morning before heading out for an adventurous day. There are so many fun things to do and so many places to see within close proximity of this beautifully, well-kept home and I would strongly advise anyone to call it their 'home away from home' on their next North Shore adventure. It was absolutely wonderful from the first floor to the third - and everything in-between!"

  • Amazing space to enjoy an amazing place

"This is a fabulous space. The condo comfortably sleeps up to 8 people. The beds are awesome, the kitchen is really easy to cook in, the community area is comfortable and big enough for 2 families. The views are AMAZING. We loved this place, everything was well kept, clean, comfortable. The beach is so beautiful and the proximity to everything is perfect. We went in and out of Grand Marias easily, hiked, climbed, ate, what more could you ask for in a VROB. It feels like home. I heard the art work was done by the owner. Sooo Great."

Lutsen Travel Tips

Lutsen Vacation Rentals Are Conveniently Located

Located off Highway 62 and just 90 minutes out of Duluth, Lutsen cottages are in Cook County, Minnesota. The area is also conveniently situated just four hours from the Twin Cities on Interstate 35. The closest airport is Duluth. It is a popular ski resort in winter, and summers are ideal for a variety of outdoor activities.

Lutsen Lake Houses in the Heart of the Superior National Forest

Set around Lake Superior, in the heart of the Superior National Forest, Lutsen vacation rentals are ideal for visitors to enjoy the many activities around here. During the winter, the area sees an average of over 10 feet of snow. This makes an ideal vacation for skiers and snowboarders. The mountains attract skiers who come for the choice of over 92 slopes, ranging from beginner to very advances. There is over 1,000 feet of drop from top to bottom; there are also plenty of ski lifts to get up to the top. The cross country skiing has gradual descents on tracked trails through the forests of birch, aspen pines and maple. Across the county, there are acres of groomed trails, snaking through the forests from the State Park at Temperance River to the Bally Creek Trails close to Cascade River State Park. The spectacular skiing is matched only by the stunning scenery. Another activity that is increasingly popular is snowshoeing. A more low impact, gentler exercise, it is a perfect way for the family to explore the area and spot the many species of wildlife.

To take a break from the skiing and snowboarding, visitors may enjoy a unique dog sledding adventure. Here, visitors can race down the backcountry trails, being pulled along by a team of excited huskies. Here, visitors can also enjoy a peaceful ride through the mountains on one of the sleigh rides in the area.

Visit the Newly Opened Gunflint Trail

Lutsen lake houses are close to a number of great restaurants. Unlike many areas, there are no chain restaurants here. The focus is all about local produce, freshly made and served with a warm welcome. Whether visitors desire a casual atmosphere, the wonderful local seafood or a good steak, there is an ideal place.

A recent addition to the many wonderful experiences around Lutsen is the new designated National Scenic Byway at the historic Gunflint Trail. This trail winds through the east-west corridor of Boundary Waters Wilderness. This trail follows a footpath discovered in the 1800s but used by Native Americans long before that. The Ojibwe tribe made its home in the area for over 20,000 years. It is over 55 miles beginning at Grand Marais in Minnesota and finishing near the Canadian border, at Saganaga Lake. Along the trail are many points of interests, including Hedstrom Lumber Mill, the George Washington Forest and much more. Along the drive, visitors should watch for black bears, moose, deer, fox, lynx, wolves, pine marten, and birds such as eagles. Near the rivers, keep an eye out for beavers and otters. In the rivers, anglers may want to fish for bass, rainbow and lake trout, walleye, pike and more. When visiting the lakes along this trail, search the rocks and cliff faces for carvings made by the Ojibwe centuries ago.

Lutsen Cottages Have Impressive Luxuries as Standard
