Lutsen Lake Houses in the Heart of the Superior National Forest
Set around Lake Superior, in the heart of the Superior National Forest, Lutsen vacation rentals are ideal for visitors to enjoy the many activities around here. During the winter, the area sees an average of over 10 feet of snow. This makes an ideal vacation for skiers and snowboarders. The mountains attract skiers who come for the choice of over 92 slopes, ranging from beginner to very advances. There is over 1,000 feet of drop from top to bottom; there are also plenty of ski lifts to get up to the top. The cross country skiing has gradual descents on tracked trails through the forests of birch, aspen pines and maple. Across the county, there are acres of groomed trails, snaking through the forests from the State Park at Temperance River to the Bally Creek Trails close to Cascade River State Park. The spectacular skiing is matched only by the stunning scenery. Another activity that is increasingly popular is snowshoeing. A more low impact, gentler exercise, it is a perfect way for the family to explore the area and spot the many species of wildlife.
To take a break from the skiing and snowboarding, visitors may enjoy a unique dog sledding adventure. Here, visitors can race down the backcountry trails, being pulled along by a team of excited huskies. Here, visitors can also enjoy a peaceful ride through the mountains on one of the sleigh rides in the area.
Visit the Newly Opened Gunflint Trail
Lutsen lake houses are close to a number of great restaurants. Unlike many areas, there are no chain restaurants here. The focus is all about local produce, freshly made and served with a warm welcome. Whether visitors desire a casual atmosphere, the wonderful local seafood or a good steak, there is an ideal place.
A recent addition to the many wonderful experiences around Lutsen is the new designated National Scenic Byway at the historic Gunflint Trail. This trail winds through the east-west corridor of Boundary Waters Wilderness. This trail follows a footpath discovered in the 1800s but used by Native Americans long before that. The Ojibwe tribe made its home in the area for over 20,000 years. It is over 55 miles beginning at Grand Marais in Minnesota and finishing near the Canadian border, at Saganaga Lake. Along the trail are many points of interests, including Hedstrom Lumber Mill, the George Washington Forest and much more. Along the drive, visitors should watch for black bears, moose, deer, fox, lynx, wolves, pine marten, and birds such as eagles. Near the rivers, keep an eye out for beavers and otters. In the rivers, anglers may want to fish for bass, rainbow and lake trout, walleye, pike and more. When visiting the lakes along this trail, search the rocks and cliff faces for carvings made by the Ojibwe centuries ago.
