"I stayed at the Northwoods Retreat for a long weekend with a friend, her 10 year old daughter and my two Border Collies, and I cannot say enough good things about it! Everything was exactly as advertised and exceeded all my expectations. It was comfortable, quiet, peaceful, remote and relaxing. There were plenty of supplies in the cabin and lots of dry wood for our nightly bonfires. The Border Collies and I started every morning off with a jog down the logging road and back then down the road a half mile to Morcom Lake to cool off, followed by a hike in the woods on a 4 wheeler trail there. I never saw a soul, I felt like we had the area all to ourselves. We checked out some other 4 wheeler trails by the cabin and in the State Forest area nearby, and I found several more to check out next time. There were lots of ripe raspberry bushes near the cabin which was an extra treat, and the minimal mosquito population was an unexpected bonus. It was an unusually hot weekend (90 degrees during the day), so we didn't try the sauna, but it sure looked nice. Outside of hiking we spent our days lounging in the yard reading and enjoying the amazing peace and quiet and the beauty of nature around us. I would recommend this cabin to anyone looking for a relaxing getaway, and I definitely look forward to our next visit very soon!"

"We had a great time at the cabin! There was 8 of us, so it was a full house and it worked great! Took a class at North House Folk School (amazing!) and the cabin was nice and close to town yet still felt private and secluded. The setting is beautiful and the cabin had everything we needed. Just wish it had been warmer so we could use the kayaks! Would stay here again in a heartbeat!"

HIGHEST RECOMMENDATION! WONDERFUL HOME ON FABULOUS LAKE!
"We have stayed in this Deer Lake home for a number of years and have absolutely fallen in love with the place. I agree with the other reviewer who said it feels like their own home. With its mix of rooms and amenities, indoor and out, it works well for families with children, or groups of adults, individually or in couples. The main house includes four separate bedrooms with bath suites, three of which have newly remodeled baths. And the owners have just added a brand new guest house with two additional bed/bath suites, each with separate entrance. In the main house, there is a good- sized living room with timber framing, high ceiling and stone fireplace. But the heart of the house is the kitchen-dining room with its large bay of windows overlooking the lake. The kitchen has great appliances (two dishwashers!) and is well stocked with cookware and utensils and an array of new and antique tableware. (In fact, the entire house is filled with a collection of antiques that is a treat all on its own.) The kitchen/dining room is one of those comfortable big rooms where you can prepare and serve a meal that feels right for only two people or for a dozen or more (or for dancing while cooking; yes, we actually find ourselves doing this). Right outside the kitchen is a large deck with a big table and umbrella (again, suitable for 2 to 12 people) overlooking the lake. On the other side of the deck is a screen house that provides a great place for daytime lounging or evening activities sans mosquitoes. The house also has a yard, fire pit (with hose nearby), several other decks, and down on the lakefront a sauna, outdoor shower (it is fabulous: I think I have yet to take a shower inside the house) and long dock with a boat lift and THE LAKE. If the house is great, the lake is an absolute marvel. They call Deer Lake the “lake of changing colors.” That sounds like one of those cheesy 1950’s promotional slogans. But in this case it is actually true. Depending on wind and time of day, the surface of the lake does actually alternate between shades of bright blue and luminous turquoise. The water is cool and crystal clear, the bottom sandy; there are bays and islands with deep woods and eagles nests; you can see fish go by below you as you swim. I could go on and on. Bottom line: This is a fabulous home from which to enjoy a fabulous lake."

"We had a family reunion in Grand Marais and booked this cabin. We had nine adults and five kids and there was more than enough room for everyone.
The cabin had everything we could possibly need from all kinds of kitchen supplies, to plenty of fire wood, to board games, to canoes and kayaks.
I've stayed at many cabins that said they were fully stocked with supplies and simply weren't. It was nice that this place had everything I would need.
I had several questions prior to the stay and getting ahold of the owner was very easy. He replied to all my emails promptly and was a ton of help.
Great Place. We will be back."
