Mississippi is a state in the southern region of the United States. It is bordered by Alabama to the east, Tennessee to the north, Arkansas to the northwest, and Louisiana to the south and southeast. It also has just under 100 miles of coastline that run along the Gulf of Mexico. The capital city is Jackson which is centrally located within the state. The Jackson Evers International Airport currently hosts several of the major North American airlines on regular commercial flights. If you are planning a vacation on the Gulf Coast, the closest airport is in New Orleans which is located in Louisiana. It is just a short 40-mile drive from New Orleans to the border of Mississippi. The major vacation towns include Biloxi resorts and Gulfport resorts, which are between 70 and 80 miles from New Orleans. Upon your arrival, if you plan to explore the region, the best way to get around is by car. There is an extensive and well-maintained road network. As long as you have a road map or GPS, you should easily be able to navigate your way around. If you are flying in from destinations further afield, you can arrange a rental car from either of the airports for the duration of your stay.

Mississippi enjoys a long summer and relatively short winter. This makes it a popular summer vacation destination. While most people still tend to travel during the peak holiday season of July and August, the longer summer season means that you can still enjoy good weather outside of peak season. In the summer months, the temperatures average around 85 degrees Fahrenheit. The warmest month is traditionally July. During the winter months, the temperatures average 48 degrees Fahrenheit, with the coldest month being January. The northern interior is generally more temperate that the coastal areas. Occasional snowfalls are not uncommon in the central and northern parts; however, it is seldom significant amounts and it usually quickly melts away. Most of the rainfall occurs during the summer months in the form of short-lived but dramatic thunderstorms. The Gulf Coast is particularly prone to hurricanes that blow across the Gulf of Mexico in the late summer and early fall months. The interior of the state usually gets the dregs of the tropical storms which results in heavy rainfall.

Mississippi has a rich cultural heritage. Like its neighboring states, it has a strong music tradition with the signature music style being the Blues. In Clarksdale, you will find the Delta Blues Museum where you can see memorabilia and photographs of some of the great Blues legends. There are also numerous Blues Bars across the state where you can hear your favorite tune. Tupelo, which is in northeast Mississippi, is the birthplace of Elvis Presley. Here, you can tour his childhood home which is a humble two-room house. Next door is a museum which contains many different memorabilia items that detail his life. You can also take a stroll through town and see the fairgrounds where he performed early in his career or the hardware store where he bought his first guitar. For country music fans, you can visit Meridian which is the hometown of Jimmy Rogers. The Jimmy Rogers Museum in town pays tribute to this country music legend.
