  • Top of the World

"Downing Mountain Lodge (DML) is one of the most unique and beautiful places you can visit. The lodge sits about midway up Downing Mountain and commands a sweeping view of the Bitterroot Valley and the town of Hamilton. I have spent a week at DML for the past two summers with my family and also used it in the winter. I would highly recommend it. The lodge is rustic with a huge central fireplace and a professional kitchen in the back. The building was once a public restaurant called the Gubb Steak. This fact gives the place a lot of its charm since the owners have left some of the tables and chairs, glassware, pots and pans etc.. There is also a great deck with a built in charcoal barbeque. The owners live down in Hamilton and are great to deal with. There is NOBODY nearby so if solitude is what you want solitude is what you will get. The property backs up to the largest tract of wilderness land in the continental USA. You can explore the mountain or head down to numerous NFS trailheads nearby. The Bitterroot River and Lake Como are also great for recreation. In the winter DML is a backcountry skier’s dream and you are not far from Lost Trail Pass if you prefer to ski in bounds. Hamilton is a great little town with multiple restaurants, three or four grocery stores and a couple of great breweries. There is a terrific playground near the Armory where my kids like to play. Hamilton is just 45 minutes from Missoula which is a great place to spend the day. One thing you need to consider is that DML is a 20 minute drive from Hamilton up 17 switchbacks from the valley floor. The dirt road is in good shape and it is unlikely you will see any traffic on it. That makes the drive is pretty painless. My family and I go up and down almost every day when we visit. With that said if you are not comfortable with that type of thing you should think twice. Access is slightly more complex in the winter due to snow so you will want to discuss that with the owners beforehand. I should stress that the commute up to the cabin is one of the things that makes it so special. This place is one of a kind so check it out."

  • Great retreat for family and friends

"We spent four days at Stonetower to celebrate my stepson's wedding and hosted the rehearsal dinner (60 people) in the finished barn. The house, apartment, and barn are great facilities for anyone wanting to have a social gathering, and Peggy has party tables, chairs and decorations, so the rehearsal dinner was quite easy to set up. The house and apartment were clean with well-equipped kitchens, lots of beds and space, and numerous fascinating artistic flourishes. The deck was a great place to enjoy the summer evenings and mountain views. Stonetower was just the right place for us to enjoy with family and friends--thanks to Peggy for making the experience so much fun and being so welcoming."

  • Home Away from Home

"We wanted a place to rest and relax and this was it.Great quite location, hiking trails right out the door. We hauled our Harley's over with us and had amazing rides and with a garage to park them in it was wonderful. (Lolo pass is a must) I love to cook and the kitchen had everything I needed which was really nice. We stayed for 10 days and I wish it had been more. The home has a true awe factor when you walk in the door. If we are back in this area again this is where I want to stay!"

  • Loved it!

"My husband and I spent 4 nights at Withy Gate and were very pleased with it. Clean as a pin with everything we needed and more. Kris's personal touches were appreciated. Loved the patio area and it is located in a great location in Hamilton. We would definitely stay here again!"
