From its early days as a railway town in the late 1800s, Kalispell is now an ideal vacation spot for those looking for great recreation close to Glacier National Park. Kalispell lodging is bordered by Kootenai National Forest and Flathead National Forest, both strikingly beautiful forests, famed for their mountains carved by glaciers over thousands of years. Kalispell is close to US Highway 2 and US Highway 93, and less than 10 miles from Glacier International Airport. The area is accessed from Interstate 90, some 100 miles to the south.

The mountains surrounding the area provide protection from harsh weather, making this a good vacation destination year-round. It benefits from with long, warm summers with very little humidity, nice autumns and snowy winters.

There are also driving trails in the forest, with some 1,700 miles dedicated to vehicles for scenic drives. The stunning scenery of Glacier National Park, with its terrain of ridges, peaks and incredible hanging valleys is not to be missed. Here there are over 1.2 million acres with over 50 glaciers, over 200 lakes, waterfalls and lush forests to explore. Visitors should watch for wonderful animals such as deer, elk, goats, bighorn sheep as well as wolves and both black and grizzly bears.

Summer visitors will particularly want to enjoy the Going to the Sun Road. This famous road is over 52 miles long and climbs 3,000 feet. The reward is some of the most impressive views over the Continental Divide. The road is open from June and closes in October.

Visit Bigfork, the Village by the Bay

Among the interesting towns here is Bigfork, known locally as the Village by the Bay because of its sheltered location. Bigfork is an arts community and visitors will enjoy the many art galleries, sidewalk cafes, restaurants and live theater. Many visitors to Kalispell cabins enjoy the unique stores and locally run restaurants. The town prides itself on its western heritage and there are some excellent outdoor sculptures and artwork. The live theater takes place both indoors and outdoors at several sites in the town, including Sliter Memorial Park.
