Just 18 miles west of the town of Anaconda on State Highway 1 is Georgetown Lake lodging. The area is easily accessible on Interstate 90. This mountainous region is a recreation area, popular with those seeking an outdoor vacation in a forest setting. With its hot summers and cold winters, it offers much for vacationers wanting plenty of activities at any time of year.

Georgetown Lake Cabins to Catch a Prize Kokanee Salmon

Georgetown Lake vacation rentals are ideal for those who want activities such as hiking, biking, horseback riding and water sports such as canoeing and kayaking in summer. The lake itself has four boat launching areas accessible to the public. Anglers come for the excellent fishing, with Kokanee salmon being the prize catch. There are also several excellent golf courses within easy reach of the area such as the Old Works Golf Course in nearby Anaconda. Here, there is also Fairmont Hot Springs Resort, with several indoor and outdoor pools, waterslides, a zoo and an 18-hole golf course. Also in Anaconda is the Copper Chute. This is a 40-foot slide that the children will really enjoy. Another great day trip here is to Mount Haggin Wildlife Management Area where visitors can watch the elk and hike. During the winter, this area is a popular cross country skiing spot and there are incredible views from Mount Haggin and in nearby Pintler Range.

There are also two Blue Ribbon trout fishing streams close to Georgetown Lake cabins at Rock Creek and the Big Hole River. Georgetown Lake itself remains a popular fishing area even in winter, when anglers participate in ice fishing.

Nearby, the historic town of Philipsburg attracts more than its share of visitors. There are a variety of wonderful stores set in the restored buildings. The Pintler Scenic Loop here has long been a popular drive. It is 63 miles from Anaconda through Philipsburg and on to Drummond, following the Flint Creek. The scenery of snowy mountains, hills covered with wild sage, lakes and meadowland combine to make this a spectacular drive.

Mine for Sapphires near Georgetown Lake Cabins

The area around Georgetown Lake cabins is popular with hunters and those who enjoy wildlife photography, with bear, Bighorn sheep, cougar, deer, elk, and moose as well as game birds all here.

For those who want to try mining for sapphires, there is the opportunity to do so at Gem Peak at Rock Creek. Sapphires have been mined here since 1892 and range in color from the classic blue to red and green. Visit Gem Mountain, Opal Mountain Gems or the Sapphire Gallery and try it for yourself.

The area is also home to a variety of ghost towns, many as a result of the one specific event. That was the repealing of the Sherman Act on August 1, 1983. Within a day, thousands of miners abandoned the towns that had sprung up around the silver mines that are scattered around the region. These abandoned towns are now a visitor attraction. In this area, ghost towns open to visitors include Black Pine Mining District, Granite, Garnet and Bear Gulch, Kirkville, Rumsey and Princeton. Interested visitors should visit the Ghost Town Hall of Fame at the Granite County Museum.
