About ten minutes away is Main Beach, where there are many adventures for a family outing away from the water. Shopping is waiting in Portsmouth at its outlet stores or any of its many fascinating local shops. This lovely town also offers a children's museum and a boat trip to the Isle of Shoals. The Portsmouth Historical Society Museum is located at John Paul Jones House, where there are artifacts from the mid 1700's along with a model replica of Captain Jones ship, the Ranger. Several other mansions of the 1700's are open for tourists. One of particular interest is the Warner House, which has a lightening rod that was installed in 1762. By itself this fact is fairly uninteresting, until you understand that Benjamin Franklin was supposedly on hand to supervise the installation.
