Red River, in Taos County, New Mexico, is a resort town in the Sangre de Cristo Mountains. Conveniently located for Albuquerque International Airport, the area of Red River in New Mexico is also situated within easy access of major roads, such as Interstate 25 and US Highway 38. It is just a three-hour drive from Albuquerque; it can also be reached by rail on the New Mexico Rail Runner. This mountainous area is an old mining area where gold, silver and copper mines were the focus. With hot summers and warm winters, Red River lodging is popular all year-round.

The old Pioneer Trail takes the road originally built by miners in the 19th century. Along this trail, visitors can explore old mines and view the historic buildings. Longer, overnight and more difficult hikes are well worth the effort with many ending at one of the lakes in the area where hikers can fish or enjoy a cooling swim. Other activities near here include rafting, tubing, rock climbing, tennis and miniature golf. The wilderness area of Carson National Forest is over 86,000 acres where visitors are welcome only on foot or horseback. Here, visitors can explore Cruces Basin, Columbine-Hondo, Latir Peak, Pecos and Wheeler Peak. The park is home to a variety of wildlife including antelope, black bear, bighorn sheep, elk, mule deer and mountain lions. Among the 400 miles of clear mountain streams and lakes, visitors can fish for trout and other fish. Responsible off road drivers are welcome along a variety of "Jeeping" trails. Areas of particular interest are Cabresto Canyon and Lake Road, 4th of July Canyon, Garrapata Ridge, Goose Lake, Mallette Canyon, Old Red River Pass, and Trail Canyon. There are also many opportunities for fishing, horseback riding, hunting, mountain tours and rafting trips.
