  • Our favorite place on earth.

"This past summer, I took a sabbatical from my job in New York, my wife quit her job, and we spent three months in Taos. It was the best three months of our lives, and the earthship could not have been a better home base. The house itself is one-of-a-kind--you can lay on the sofa and watch shooting stars directly above you through enormous, 20 foot, slanted windows; the way half of the house is glass and half is built into the mountain means that it stays warm at night and cool in the day in the summer, when the field in front of the house becomes a blanket of wildflowers. The only sounds are of wind and rain and wildlife and the ubiquitous hummingbirds; I've never slept better in my life. All the modern conveniences are there and in great shape, and the house is clean and well taken care of; otherwise, you feel like you're living in the outdoors, but with none of the discomfort. My wife and I lovingly describe the decor as "If Stevie Nicks were a hobbit and a hunter." We'd gladly live there forever if we could. But even better than the house is the location. It's about 250 yards behind the owner's house--which is great, because it means they're usually nearby if you need anything--but feels like it's miles away from anywhere. Out the back door are literally hundreds of thousands of acres of National Forest, miles of trails and old logging roads, and more wildlife than I've ever seen anywhere (the best way to put it is that the only thing we DIDN'T see was a mountain lion--probably for the best!). We didn't see another soul the entire summer back there; it was as if we had it all to ourselves. And it actually IS our land, as taxpayers and citizens--I came to truly appreciate what that means. Then, of course, you're just 15 minutes from Taos, and no more than 2 hours from all the various wonders of Northern New Mexico, which would take a lifetime to explore. Neither Taos nor New Mexico need me to review them, but if you've never experienced this part of the country, make it your next vacation; if you have, then I cannot imagine a better home base than the earth ship. I would give it 6 stars if I could. One final note, since I've got some room left: if there are any flyfisherman reading this, after a summer's worth of fishing in which I never spent more than two days fishing the same water, I've come to believe that Taos and its environs are the best kept fishing secret around. . . And the owner knows all the best spots!"

  • Cozy, great location, friendly owners

"Cozy upstairs studio with lots of room, large deck for watching the stars, very well supplied kitchen... hot tub, which I didn't have time to use! and GREAT location. Walking distance to the center of Taos...quiet neighborhood...Only caveat.. parking place under the deck is for 2 cars for the two apts, and a little tight so if you have a truck or large car may have to park somewhere out for the struts holding up the deck when pulling in or out...I wanted to stay a little later than the normal check out and because there was no one coming in after me, the owners were very accomodating and was able to stay. Also good water pressure and hot water. thank you!"

  • 2014, Spring Break

"When we walked into the condo....WOW! We loved the New Mexico decor, and felt like we had stepped back in time. It was perfect for our family of 6. The kitchen was large enough for family dinners, and some card games later at night. The private master bedroom upstairs with the jetted tub was a very nice bonus after a long day of skiing. And to have a washer and dryer was great. Definitely overpacked...will not do that again. Thank you Lise and Nick for the extra special touches when we, bread, milk in fridge. We have found our home away from home....and will be returning!!!"
