  • Our Family

"This place is perfect for any family or friends wishing to spend some quality time together. The house is very comfortable. The surrounding property is gorgeous. The owners are very helpful and made sure everything was just as described. We liked it so much, we booked a second stay. Restaurants and supermarkets are 20 to 35 minutes away. Many places to visit, but we spent most of our time enjoying the relaxation and immediate surroundings. If you book this place, you won't be disappointed."

  • Charming, short weekend stay

"We rented the house primarily as a place to sleep while attending a wedding in nearby Herondale Farms and wound up wishing we had time to just hang around the house and enjoy the property and views. It is wonderfully secluded; no other homes are in view and there. There are woods behind the house and a wonderful large meadow in front. It is the owner's country home and is very warm and personal. Some of the other wedding party stayed in modern houses around Upper Rhoda Pond but they were furnished as rentals and did not have the personal warmth of someone's home. The refrigerator was stocked with the request that we use what we need, replace what we have used up and throw out what was expired. Nice! The house was spotless; the internet did work and that is essential since cell phone reception is nil. There is also a landline for use and the owner considerately provides calling cards for long distance. It took a while to convince the owner to give me the exact location so I could be sure it was the property I viewed on satellite images but seeing how secluded it is I understand why the owner wanted to be sure we were serious renters. The only complaints, that were only from one of my adult sons, was that the beds are very soft, almost like feather beds. My wife loved that! There are nice artisan stores in Millerton, 20 minutes SE on Hwy 8, a good grocery store, and a nearby Alpaca farm. There are a few stairs so it's not wheel chair friendly but I was on crutches and had no problem. It's a lovely, personal home for well behaved guests!"

  • Unbelievable Wedding Weekend

"Our wedding was quite the best weekend of my life. That being said, it took an army of support to make our dreams come true. The CURRENT staff (Bob, Dave, and company) were wonderful. We had worked with a previous property manager for the house and our experience with her was a bit of a nightmare. Bob went above and beyond to rectify the issues that were a result of this person’s mistakes. Bob and Dave made every effort to make sure we were comfortable and had everything we needed. For example, the clothes dryer was broken, and within an hour of calling Bob they had replaced the dryer with a new unit. Bob and Dave made themselves available to our guests 24 hours a day and popped in every now and then to check on us. Like ninjas, they would check the pool temperature, take out garbage, spot clean the grounds - all without us ever knowing. I firmly believe, with these folks in place, this venue will succeed in hosting many more beautiful weddings. A few important notes about the house; the water is well water. This means it is treated in a specific way and the water has a sulphuric smell. This is not abnormal for this type of system, but can be a shock if you are not expecting it. YOU will not come out of the shower smelling of sulphur, but the bathroom will. Get yourself some incense or scented candles. I promise you will want them. The house is gorgeous but RUSTIC. If you are looking for a ultra modern, white glove mansion with sleek amenities, this house is not for you. For us all of the charm outweighed any need for glossy accouterments. The windows are worn, the cobblestones a tad loose, the pavilion a little leaky (it also rained really HARD on our wedding day). We had an easy to please, easy going crowd so none of this mattered to us - if you are into the beauty of vintage, shabby chic, rustic country venues this is the place for you. You will need to bring in EVERYTHING for your wedding (again not abnormal). This may change as SOH becomes more popular but at the time of our wedding it was truly a DIY venue. They require you rent a toilet trailer, you will need to bring in catering, and ALL rentals, flowers, etc. You will probably want a golf cart to transport guests to and fro and there is no formal ‘parking’ or ‘valet’ - another reason for a golf cart. But above all else, every single person at SOH was kind, helpful, and supportive. Our wedding day was extraordinary and we felt like we were in great hands the entire time."

  • An incredible fall getaway with close friends and our labrador

"Our weekend getaway to Idle Hour Farm exceeded all expectations. In fact, I would say it was the best weekend of my life. A group of 10 of us New York City dwellers packed our bags for what inevitably became a relaxing, rejuvenating, and inexplicably delightful stay. The pictures are lovely, but hardly do the place justice. It's hard to capture that end-of-summer / beginning-of-fall magic. The leaves were turning colors and beginning to fall, and the way the sunlight hit the lake and the illuminated the golden colors of the leaves in the backyard was just stunning. Our labrador had his first swim in the lake / pond out back, and was so happy to have so much freedom to run around and play fetch and to nap in the sun. We really lucked out with 80 degree weather, and some of the group went swimming and took the little paddleboat out onto the water. At night, we used the propane grill to make a feast of grilled vegetables, burgers, hot dogs, and the works. The little beach near the water became the perfect place to gather around the bonfire pit, roasting s'mores (it was a first for the Australian and Swede who were with us) and listening to my boyfriend play the guitar by the campfire. Two from our group went on a nearby scenic hike that Susan had recommended, to the Fire Tower. We had planned to go to the nearby vineyard for a wine tasting and to the orchard for apple picking but we just couldn't pull ourselves away from the house. It was everything we needed and more. There was plenty of space for the 10 of us, with big, comfortable rooms, an open office that perfectly fit an air mattress, and two huge, comfy couches down in the basement. The basement area became our hangout spot for the first night, where there was also a nice, well-equipped kitchen with all the amenities you could need, and a great dining room table. We listened to music and relaxed downstairs for the night. The next evening, we played Scrabble out on the expansive deck and continued to relax out there through dinnertime; the table fit our entire feast (cupcakes and wine and all) and was just wonderful. Everyone had an absolutely amazing time. It was certainly a weekend we'll all remember for years to come. Thank you Susan, for sharing your beautiful home with us for the weekend."
