  • love this place!

"Threw myself a 30th birthday weekend away with a dozen friends. The house comfortably fit all of us, and we could have had even more. The location is perfect for traveling from NYC (train was pretty easy to organize) and visiting Storm King. The lake is gorgeous, everyone enjoyed boating, morning noon and night and we even got to use the pool. The house has literally everything you could need for cooking and entertaining a group this size. Could not have had a better experience! I may even come back and rent another time, it was so lovely."

  • Oasis

"Our family (parents and three adult children) had a wonderful time at this house last year. We liked it so much, we are returning this summer! The wrap-around deck, overlooking a long, forest valley is fabulous. You can spend all day there. The deck has a big picnic table, a chaise lounge and plenty of comfortable chairs and little tables, a gas grill, and a charcoal grill. Inside, the first floor has an open layout with the kitchen, dining area and living room flowing into each other, facing a wall of windows overlooking the forest, with views of the hills beyond, and the sky. The pool is refreshing and close enough to the house to have a chat with folks on the deck while lounging in the pool. This place is very comfortable and relaxing and totally "away from it all" - yet easy travel to NYC by train or car. Cold Spring offers restaurants, and a park by the Hudson. Dia Beacon and Storm King are short drives away. Highly recommended!!"

  • An incredible fall getaway with close friends and our labrador

"Our weekend getaway to Idle Hour Farm exceeded all expectations. In fact, I would say it was the best weekend of my life. A group of 10 of us New York City dwellers packed our bags for what inevitably became a relaxing, rejuvenating, and inexplicably delightful stay. The pictures are lovely, but hardly do the place justice. It's hard to capture that end-of-summer / beginning-of-fall magic. The leaves were turning colors and beginning to fall, and the way the sunlight hit the lake and the illuminated the golden colors of the leaves in the backyard was just stunning. Our labrador had his first swim in the lake / pond out back, and was so happy to have so much freedom to run around and play fetch and to nap in the sun. We really lucked out with 80 degree weather, and some of the group went swimming and took the little paddleboat out onto the water. At night, we used the propane grill to make a feast of grilled vegetables, burgers, hot dogs, and the works. The little beach near the water became the perfect place to gather around the bonfire pit, roasting s'mores (it was a first for the Australian and Swede who were with us) and listening to my boyfriend play the guitar by the campfire. Two from our group went on a nearby scenic hike that Susan had recommended, to the Fire Tower. We had planned to go to the nearby vineyard for a wine tasting and to the orchard for apple picking but we just couldn't pull ourselves away from the house. It was everything we needed and more. There was plenty of space for the 10 of us, with big, comfortable rooms, an open office that perfectly fit an air mattress, and two huge, comfy couches down in the basement. The basement area became our hangout spot for the first night, where there was also a nice, well-equipped kitchen with all the amenities you could need, and a great dining room table. We listened to music and relaxed downstairs for the night. The next evening, we played Scrabble out on the expansive deck and continued to relax out there through dinnertime; the table fit our entire feast (cupcakes and wine and all) and was just wonderful. Everyone had an absolutely amazing time. It was certainly a weekend we'll all remember for years to come. Thank you Susan, for sharing your beautiful home with us for the weekend."
