  • Charming & Immaculate

"This is a beautiful and cozy home very close to downtown with every possible thing you could possibly need provided for you (except maybe wifi, but there are much better things to do in Black Mountain besides surf your computer so we didn't mind too much...we never even turned on the TV). It is quite possibly the cleanest rental home I've ever seen. The caretaker, Darlene, does a bang-up job and she really worked hard to turn the house around from the renters who vacated that day so we could get in before dinner. She has an impressive garden on the property and invited us to eat whatever we would like from it. The grounds are gorgeous and we loved lying in the grass under the massive oak in the front yard. The deck is fabulous and we enjoyed breakfasts out there at the huge handmade wooden table. We loved all the solar lighting outside greeting us when we returned home in the evening from nights out in Black Mountain. The upstairs bedroom is quite warm in the summer, but cooled down quickly at night with fans and the window open. We were 5 couples traveling together and Karen's other property next door, the Craftsman Cottage, provided us the extra 2 bedrooms we needed to accommodate everyone. I would highly recommend this property for your trip to Black Mountain."

  • Great cabin, Great private location, Great Hosts

"Our stay at Winter Star Retreat was the best experience we have had using Home Away. We go to the NC Mountains several times a year, and always rent cabins through Home Away. This visit tops them all! Our hosts are wonderfully thoughtful and go the extra mile to make sure the guests are comfortable. The cabin is really cute, and the waterfall is awesome. It rained a lot during our visit, so we didn't get to hike to the mine. We plan to return asap! We have already told our friends, and they will be planning a stay also."

Old Fort Travel Tips

Old Fort Vacation Rentals Serve As Bridge to History

Named in the vein of the "old fort" living that proceeded the Revolutionary War, Old Fort vacation rentals scenically sit just east of Asheville at the foot of the Blue Ridge Mountains, near the head of the Catawba River and just off the Continental Divide. For more than 8,000 years, the cozy Western North Carolina town has reverently provided its lure of old-school charms and southern-styled hospitality. Persistent sounds of nature and flowing mountain air breezes make the appeal of trout or fly-fishing at nearby Newberry Creek all the more enticing. Private Blue Ridge Mountain cabins can offer cozy dining facilities, charmingly enhanced by native stone fireplaces, and fully kitchens replete with modern cabinetry; they also can offer the combination of spacious bedrooms and hand-crafted staircases leading to open-air loft spaces, which make your stay all the more heavenly.

Old Fort Cabin Living, New Age Tourism

At the heart of the Old Fort, Blue Ridge Mountains Resorts beat the pulse of exorbitant, charmed North Carolina living at its most rich and refined. Immerse yourself in attractions ranging from skiing at nearby resorts, hiking any one of several wondrous trails, climbing Grandfather Mountain, or simply chilling out via a rocker under the crystal blue skies and basking sunlight.

Old Fort Lodging, History Fully on Display

Explore North Carolina's history through the prism of a number of world famous museums, including the state-run Mountain Gateway, which features riveting exhibits on pioneer living bolstered by a pair of authentic log cabins from that era. Also, the nearby Carson House boasts exhibits that extensively delve into Civil War lore, including a wildly popular and historic Davy Crockett themed exhibit. And then there are the Appalachian Artisan Gallery and Old Fort Music Hall, where exhibitions exuding both handmade art and bluegrass themed music revues are likewise delightfully common.
