"My boyfriend and I along with our dog stayed here for 5 nights this past July. Giving a rating of a 4 is generous; a 3.5 would be a more accurate and fair rating. The house is equipped with everything you'd need, but could definitely use a thorough cleaning and perhaps some closet doors to hide the clutter. I've been renting vacation houses and cabins for years, and have never been responsible for the amount of cleaning that you take on when renting this house, and you are charged a cleaning fee. Perhaps relying so heavily on renters to clean is the reason for the less than clean state of the house. You are also responsible for driving your trash to the neighboring town’s community dumpster. All laundry has to be washed, dried, and put away prior to you leaving, which really makes it difficult to get a head start on a long drive home the morning of your departure day.
The property manager is nice enough, and leaves you to your privacy after a lengthier than usual check-in. We had no idea if we'd have cell phone reception, but we did & it was flawless service. There is internet, but not wireless. As with most outdoor places in the summer, bug spray is a must!! Be very careful when walking on the private pier because there are several loose boards.
Pros: Overall, we really enjoyed the privacy, nature, view, screened in porch, and being able to have our dog with us. The rental rate minus the cleaning fee is fair as well.
Cons: Very hard bed on 1st floor, cleanliness, extent of cleaning renters are responsible for, very slow draining bathtub on 1st floor (unless he has gotten this fixed, you will stand in your shower water), & a toilet that isn't fully functioning on the 2nd floor.
On a side note, I would highly, highly recommend taking a ferry to Cape Lookout National Seashore (awesome shelling opportunities and beaches where you won’t see another person!!). We rented a Kubota 4x4 for the day and spent the entire day on the island. It was awesome adventuring all around the island!! Also, recommend taking a short ferry to the Rachel Carson Reserve in Beaufort where you will likely get the opportunity to see the wild horses."
