"I could not be happier with the stay at your charming home. I was disappointed that the creek I told me son he would have to play in was grown up to the point it was not accessible. We did go down to the river and enjoyed our time there. The only thing I thought the house did need is a microwave. it is the only thing I really missed, and there was no way to get news or weather. no TV, radio. Maybe a weather radio would be nice. I will remember to bring one on my next visit. I will be back regularly. Thank you fo r allowing me to use your home."

"This was our first family trip to the mountains and we couldn't have picked a better home away from home. Mrs. Trudy is so wonderful from the very first time you contact her. She is readily available to answer any questions and is so helpful. The "Mountain Getaway" had plenty of space for our family of 5. It is decorated beautifully, very clean, and has a wonderful cabin feel. There are 2 bedrooms on the main floor with a queen, double, and each has it's own bathroom. Additionally there is a loft with a sleeper couch. Downstairs is an additional whole house - bedroom with queen and own bathroom, small single sleeping area, additional living room and kitchen. The porch is amazing! We spent so much time out there - eating our meals, playing card games, and nature watching (especially all of the birds that come to all of the feeders). There is a wonderfully marked trail with a map if you want to further explore the land. The property is centrally located and serves as a great base for many day trips for exploring the region. Some of our day trips included:
*Hwy 64 trip from Franklin to Highlands - beautiful mountain drive, small pull over areas to explore many hidden wonders, terrific waterfalls, Mountain Fresh Grocery is a great place to eat in Highlands.
*Hwy 441 S to Dillard - Andy's Trout Farm was a great experience and a great place to catch supper.
*Hwy 441 N to Cherokee - many shops, Native American Heritage, Great Smoky Mountains National Park (see the elk in the evening at the visitor's center), and many more outdoor activities.
*In Franklin - great restaurants, shops, many gem based activities - museums, shops, mining (Rose Creek Mine was wonderful).
This was an awesome first adventure to the mountains for our family and it was so lovely to have "Mountain Getaway" be our temporary home!"

"Our family of five just returned from a week spent in this beautiful cabin. The cabin is just as described in the VRBO posting. It is very clean and well stocked with everything you need. We loved the common area where we fished, tubed, and picnicked. The surrounding area is beautiful as well. We visited several waterfalls, the Wayah Bald fire tower (which has a spectacular view), Rufus Morgan Trail, and the towns of Highlands, Cashiers, Franklin, and Nantahala. Lake Nantahala is one of the prettiest lakes we have seen with it's emerald green water. We used the grill at the cabin to prepare several meals and also dined at Motor Co. Grill, which has great burgers! While in Franklin, we visited the town square, the gem museum, and the Franklin Historical Museum, all of which were very interesting. Overall, this was one of the best mountain vacations we have ever had. Our whole family agrees that we would happily return to River Bear Cabin and this area of North Carolina."

"We stayed a full week at Fireman's Dream in mid-July. We have a 2 year-old, a 9 month-old and 2 Labrador Retrievers and we were all accommodated nicely in this wonderful home just outside of Franklin. The layout of the cabin gave all of us the space we needed; we never felt crowded. We spent most of our time outside the cabin on the huge enclosed porch. Each end of the porch has a secure gate that kept our kids and dogs from wandering down the stairs which I really appreciated.
The home is beautifully decorated and very clean, and has all the amenities you'd need to prepare a big meal in the kitchen. We enjoyed having access to Netflix on the SmartTV in the living room. We didn't try the other TVs. The playspace in the basement was also nice for our kids. We used the washer and dryer regularly so that was also a great bonus. I do wish there was a dishwasher, but it wasn't a big deal.
Having kid gear on site was a major reason we chose to stay here. We used the pack and play, crib, highchair, swing set, 2 baby gates and many of the toys and books. It was so helpful to have these things in the cabin so we had a lighter load to pack. The first pack and play that we tried for our 9 month-old had a broken side, unfortunately, and needs to be replaced/removed. However, there was a great, sturdy wooden crib (size of a porta-crib or pack and play) that worked wonderfully. The tray on the high chair didn't seem to fit securely to the high chair, so that was a bit of a concern. The swing set is old; the see-saw swing is broken and 1 side is weighted down with a big rock. The swings were in good shape but we didn't use the slide. Theses weren't huge problems for us since most of our trip was spent away from the cabin exploring the area, but considerations for other families to take in to account.
The cabin is about a 25 minute drive from downtown Franklin and/or the nearest grocery store. The drive isn't too twisty and the driveway, while steep, was easily accessed. The drive is also beautifully scenic.
Our favorite moments at the cabin were spent sitting on the porch in the evenings playing games and shrieking when bats flew by! We also watched a storm roll in over the mountain across the valley, which was a beautiful sight.
I'd recommend this cabin to families with dogs looking for a central location to explore the Nantahala National Forest. It met and exceeded our needs!"
