  • Beautiful Mountain Lake Retreat

"We loved every minute of our one week stay at Happy Bears Cottage. We highly recommend Bear Lake Reserve for a quiet retreat amidst stunning beauty. The house is tastefully furnished and well-cared for -- there was ample seating in the living area, a huge dining table & bar stools with seating for ten, bedrooms with amazingly comfortable mattresses, and a nicely appointed gourmet kitchen adequately supplied for cooking for a crowd for the chefs among you. We loved having the large screened porch out back. It provided a safe place for our little ones to play -- with two seating areas for the adults as well. The view from the porch was stunning -- it directly overlooks a well-groomed pond, with views of the mountains beyond it. From the porch, you have easy access to a large, level grassy area around the pond -- perfect for our grandkids to enjoy. And just beyond the pond was the amphitheater area, with an even larger grassy field. This cottage is very close to the main gate, which gave us quick access to the surrounding areas on the days we wanted to explore. There are two small towns (Sylva & Cullowhee) within a 30 minute drive with grocery stores and other necessities. We spent a day at the Biltmore Estate, which is a scenic one-hour drive away. There are lots of outdoor activities available in this general area: rock climbing, hiking, beautiful waterfalls & gem mining (Franklin area), horseback riding, zip-lining & whitewater rafting. But with the outstanding amenities available at Bear Lake Reserve, you may never leave the resort! Everything was top-notch and well-groomed -- from the incredible mountaintop golf course with stunning long range views, to the lake club area with its two pool areas & gorgeous views of the lake (one infinity pool for adults & one kiddie pool with slide), plus the amenities at the lake club (theatre room, library, kids' playroom, restaurant & café, fitness center), in addition to the marina area with various boat rentals, as well as the trout pond pavilion with catch & release fishing in their stocked pond, to the Bear Creek Park area with nature trails, fire pits & camp areas for family adventures -- there are so many activities to enjoy in this resort community! Do be aware that this particular cottage is not suited for anyone with limited mobility -- there is a steep slope with stone steps from the small parking pad to the front entrance. However, I would highly recommend this cottage to anyone else -- we loved it!!"

  • Wonderful experience

"We found the cottage to be even better than described. It is perfect for two people on a romantic getaway to Asheville. It was convenient enough to get to everything in the area that we wanted. We had not planned on spending much time at the house, but it wound up being so comfortable that we hung around quite a bit. The bedroom furniture was incredibly nice and comfortable. The living room, dining area and kitchen are all one large area which we enjoyed. There was even a bottle of Biltmore Estate wine and snacks waiting for us when we arrived. (I assume it was for us... We drank it :) Only two things to be aware of, neither of which were a problem for us. This house is half of a duplex. There is a nice back yard which you do not get access to. Someone was back there having a camp fire when we arrived and we were caught off guard thinking someone was already in the house. Not a problem, they were friendly and there was no privacy issue at all. Just confused us for a second. Maybe I didn't read the description fully. Secondly, there is no washer/drier. So, bring enough clothes to last your whole trip. We are already discussing a return trip and have recommended this property to friends."

  • A great place to relax

"We rented this wonderful house for three nights. Rain or shine, the views from the screened porch were awe-inspiring--the photos don't do it justice. The place is well-equipped and comfortable--we ate in two of our three nights because we felt so relaxed we didn't want to go out, and the kitchen had everything we needed (and the view of the mountains from beside the grill is conducive to philosophical thoughts while grilling and sipping a glass of wine!) The house is convenient to attractions and dining in and around Sapphire, Cashiers and Highlands. It's probably a stretch for more than four people because of the layout of the interior, and I'm not sure it's a good place for kids (though there are three TVs and two DVD players, always helpful in a pinch.) The interior communal living space is limited, but with that porch who wants to be inside? I highly recommend this property and hope to visit again."
