  • Relaxing and Restorative

"My family and I choose this retreat originally because of the proximity to the Dupont Forest for mountain biking. What we discovered was we were so close to so many enjoyable pleasures. We played golf, hiked to view the spectacular waterfalls, rode our bikes in the forests and around the community, shopped in town at some of the terrific art galleries and antiques stores and daily paddle boarded and canoed around the lake. This home is comfortable and well-furnished and built for comfort and to enjoy the beautiful views. The deer came by each day to say hello. While seemingly remote, it was quite convenient to town and easily accessible to the highways. Our stay allowed my family to relax and play together. Our daily lives are so hectic, this home was perfect for us to reconnect and make new and lasting memories."

  • Good getaway for the stout of heart

"The Iron Duckling is a great cabin get away. Plenty of room for 6 people although 9 may feel cramped. The property is clean and very well appointed. Kitchen appliances and utensils are all high end. Phil is a friendly and courteous owner with whom I dealt to make arrangements. As the posting implies, the boat is a very special feature of the property. The lake is wonderful and you really need a boat to enjoy it. However, you will need a 4 wheel drive vehicle. We had a front wheel drive minivan and had difficulty getting to the property. Furthermore, the boat is quite the hike to and from the cabin. It's about a 15 minute hike down the mountain to the boat but, depending on your ability, it can be a strenuous 30+ minute hike back up. Older, very young, or impaired guests will have a great deal of difficulty. The property is remarkably private and quiet. There is a cabin that could be considered 'next door' that could comprimise privacy when occupied but it does not appear to be a rental and was thankfully empty during our stay. Although there are 3 bedrooms plus a loft with convertable sofas, one bedroom is smallish with a bed to match. I would think it would be suitable for a single adult in most cases. The loft could accommodate 3 kids if they get along very well. However, there is only common seating for a few people. The living room sits 4 people comfortably with chairs on the front porch that could seat 4 people in nice weather. If you bring a very full family, be prepared to compete for a comfy perch. Although the number of flying insects is suspiciously low, there is no screened area oustide so the few mosquitos there are do manage to find you if you don't have some other defense (repellant, candles, etc.) The property is rather remote. If boating isn't your thing (and you don't have a 4 wheel drive vehicle) your goal can only be solitude. I don't mean that to be a criticism. Getting away from it all can be difficult to accomplish. If you are looking to go shopping for local crafts, enjoying some cultural events, or evening taking in a movie to break up the stillness, be prepared to commute to and from the Iron Duckling. That said, we enjoyed our stay and would recommend the property with these things in mind."

  • Serenity by the River

"Our stay at the River Retreat was just wonderful. We found the cabin to be cozy and most comfortable. It was very well equipped and we could think of nothing that was neglected. We did enjoy many of the places we visited in the surrounding area but the real attraction was right at our footsteps which was the river. When at its lower levels, it was comforting and mesmerizing. We enjoyed watching it rise during the releases of which there were several durng the week. At its high point it was a completely different river, just fascinating. We also enjoyed watching the local wildlife...geese, ducks, deer, etc. Brantz, the owner was a delight to work with and most helpful. We met some friendly and pleasant neighbors inclluding Bentley the friendly Golden Retreiver who made frequent visits. Of the dozens of cabins or cabins we've stayed in over 40 years from Canada to the Florida keys, we both agreed this was our favorite setting. Can't think of a single negative."
