  • Our home away from home

"First of all, who the heck comes to the serenity of these mountains and this cabin to watch TV? And if that's what ruins your whole trip, then maybe you need to re-prioritize. My wife and I have been renting this cabin for almost 7 years. We have our boat on nearby Lake Chatuge, which is quite frankly, one of the best lakes in this country. Shhh, don't tell anybody. The value you receive in this cabin for the money you spend isn't comparable to anything around here. I'm surprised that the owner doesn't charge more for this jewel. Whenever we pull in the driveway of this place, we can immediately feel the pressures of the big city world roll right off of our shoulders. The place is well maintained and we cook most all of our meals at this cabin when we're here. But there are also a couple of decent places in nearby Hayesville if you want to eat out. Especially the Cottage House where the breakfast buffet is unmatched. But the greatest part about this cabin is the outside. Throughout the day you'll see several hummingbirds stop by the feeders. There's a barbecue grill, and a firepit with plenty of wood to burn. And then there's the creek that runs beside the cabin. It ALWAYS has water in it, and the sound will sooth your soul. The cabin is also dog friendly, which is great because we take our babies everywhere, and they love this place too. By the way, the TV works. There's even one in one of the bedrooms, but that's not the reason why I would think anyone would want to come here. But it's another great added bonus."

  • Amazing Vacation Home

"We could not have asked for a better vacation home! Everyone in our party loved this cabin - it was beautifully decorated yet very homey and comfortable. We had plenty of room to spread out (with 3 teenage boys) and everyone enjoyed the view, the firepit and the hot tub! Doug was incredibly accomodating and responsive and a pleasure to deal with. We all agreed that when (not if) we return to western NC we would stay at this home again!"

  • GREAT PLACE TO STAY!!!!!!!!!!!

"We enjoyed our stay very much at the Elf School Home. It was interesting staying in a place with so much history. The pontoon was a great extra. We enjoyed riding around on the lake. Also, enjoyed sitting on the front porch in the mornings and evenings. It was so nice and quiet. This home is very large, clean, and has everything you would need for a home away from home. Mr. Hood is very kind and easy to deal with. We enjoyed meeting him."

  • Home Away from Home - November, 2014

"We have been coming to Hayesville since 2006 and are looking forward to building on our land here in the future. In the meantime, we visit during the Fall/Winter so that we can get away from the Florida heat. This year we stayed at Fisherman's Retreat and had a truly wonderful week. We loved how easy it was to find off the main highway without having to traverse down winding roads in the dark. The cabin was cozy and truly made you feel like you were being hugged by the warmth of it. The dogs loved the fence and quite frankly so did I. It gave me peace of mind and gave them room to roam. My husband loves chopping wood and "being the outdoorsman" on these trips and the scene of him by the rushing stream, splitting wood and watching it snow made me warm and fuzzy. He said it was so relaxing just to be one with the outdoors and the crisp of the air and the quietness of the morning was much needed. The huge open floor plan for the main area was still very cozy due to the Adirondack build. Had a fire going every day. I love to cook and was pleased to find a great selection of pots/pans/glassware/Tupperware to make meals easier to prepare. We played with the giant checkers and the pool table gave us all a few good laughs because none of us were any good at it. :-) We always go to the Copper Door in Hayesville for a romantic dinner and Chef Dennis is always there to make you feel welcome! The Fisherman's Retreat is much larger than we would need, but we waited too late in the season to make our plans so there was not much available for when we wanted to travel. Lucky for us ... because we made some really spectacular memories at this home and will definitely be back. Thank you for sharing your home with us...We wish you a fantastic 2015!"
