  • Amazing house and hosts! Perfect Getaway!

"Thank you for renting your beautiful home to us. It was exactly what we were looking for. The house had so many personal touches, beautifully decorated and so cozy and comfortable. The layout was perfect and plenty of room to spread out and super kid-friendly. We would go back in a heartbeat! I bet a summer vacation there would be a blast! It was too cold to enjoy the lake at this time of year but it didn't stop the kids from playing in the mud and jumping in! I would highly recommend this house to anyone looking for a vacation home in this area! Thank you again!"

  • great stay

"We recently went up in October the place was very clean and had awesome view of the lake and great room for a group of 12. the only downside is it takes 2 weeks for the refundable deposit to return to your account, which the owners mail back to in a check. Though, if that's not a problem for you, this would be an awesome mountain retreat."

  • Good getaway for the stout of heart

"The Iron Duckling is a great cabin get away. Plenty of room for 6 people although 9 may feel cramped. The property is clean and very well appointed. Kitchen appliances and utensils are all high end. Phil is a friendly and courteous owner with whom I dealt to make arrangements. As the posting implies, the boat is a very special feature of the property. The lake is wonderful and you really need a boat to enjoy it. However, you will need a 4 wheel drive vehicle. We had a front wheel drive minivan and had difficulty getting to the property. Furthermore, the boat is quite the hike to and from the cabin. It's about a 15 minute hike down the mountain to the boat but, depending on your ability, it can be a strenuous 30+ minute hike back up. Older, very young, or impaired guests will have a great deal of difficulty. The property is remarkably private and quiet. There is a cabin that could be considered 'next door' that could comprimise privacy when occupied but it does not appear to be a rental and was thankfully empty during our stay. Although there are 3 bedrooms plus a loft with convertable sofas, one bedroom is smallish with a bed to match. I would think it would be suitable for a single adult in most cases. The loft could accommodate 3 kids if they get along very well. However, there is only common seating for a few people. The living room sits 4 people comfortably with chairs on the front porch that could seat 4 people in nice weather. If you bring a very full family, be prepared to compete for a comfy perch. Although the number of flying insects is suspiciously low, there is no screened area oustide so the few mosquitos there are do manage to find you if you don't have some other defense (repellant, candles, etc.) The property is rather remote. If boating isn't your thing (and you don't have a 4 wheel drive vehicle) your goal can only be solitude. I don't mean that to be a criticism. Getting away from it all can be difficult to accomplish. If you are looking to go shopping for local crafts, enjoying some cultural events, or evening taking in a movie to break up the stillness, be prepared to commute to and from the Iron Duckling. That said, we enjoyed our stay and would recommend the property with these things in mind."

  • Where the stars shine brighter!

"We love this place! But getting there was a joy in itself. Driving down Waterfall Byway of North Carolina you can hike to a wonderful array of waterfalls along its winding route. In autumn, the beautiful foliage lined the road embracing you in vibrant colors as you curved around every corner. As you turn into Wayah Rd. from Franklin to Nantahala, you begin at the foothills of the Smokies. Farm houses and church sit quietly below the towering peaks around them welcoming your eyes as you drive by. You'll be deep in the beautiful Nantahala Mountain before you know it, and make sure you check out Wayah Bald along the way. Upon arriving, the house was a welcoming site. Ample parking spaces for 4+ cars. The gorgeous view of the lake in autumn will take your breath away immediately when you open the front door. You'll be greeted with the warm evening light from the setting sun over the peaks across the lake. We didn't even unpack. We took off immediately to the back deck to take sight in. There is a canoe and paddle boat below at the dock waiting patient for you to take them to the water. There was always a delightful breeze gently blowing across the valley. It was a perfect autumn evening. The house had everything we needed and more. You may think they don't have it until you find it in one of the many cabinets or closets there. There is a gas furnace there for heating and the fireplace is ready if you prefer that too. Plenty of clean towels and sheets if you need them. The washer and dryer are on the lower floor along with ping pong tables and couches for you hang out. Both floor have decks looking out to the lake. The lake receded somewhat when we were there as it was autumn. The dock ran into ground as it was tied down. However, it was easy to get the canoe into the water. There may be at the most one two boat in the lake at the time when we paddle out. Most of the time it feels like the lake was all yours. I will say no more. You'll love this place if you appreciate nature and its quietness. When I looked for a vacation rental, I though it was either the lake or the mountain. But my Fiancee wanted both and she got it! We stayed Oct 26th through the 29th."
