"We had a group of family, 11 of us. The house was perfect. We had plenty of room for everyone to sleep. I love the 2 story house. We were able to let the kids play down stairs while the adults gathered upstairs. Very homely feeling. Beautiful view off deck. I would recommend traveling in a truck, SUV or 4 wheel drive, especially if it has rained or snowed. It is a private place. Owner was very easy to work with. I would highly recommend staying at Higher Ground. Very close to everything you would need."Guest: Motherhen Date of Stay: October 2014 Review Submitted: October 8, 2014View listing
"It was a wonderful blessing to be able to spend a few days in the beautiful North Carolina mountains with our daughter, son-in-law and 6 month old grandson. As the one planning our trip, I was so worried about whether the cabin would suit our needs. There was no need to worry. The Mountain GEM was perfect for our stay. It was in a convenient location making it easy to enjoy the Blue Ridge Parkway, Cataloochee Valley and the Smoky Mountains. The house was well equipped and very clean. We have come to expect a few insects in rentals, but didn't see any in this cabin. Since there were no photos on VRBO of the bathrooms, I was prepared for the worst, but was pleasantly surprised. They both were bright and clean. I especially liked the antique dressing table in the upstairs bath. Our son-in-law enjoyed a game of air hockey with our grandson playing goalie (with assistance from his mom). Both beds in the downstairs bedrooms were comfortable and the kitchen had everything we needed for preparing meals. We have learned that renters seldom take care to clean outdoor grills, so we didn't bother to bring anything to cook out on the deck. We also never made use of the hot tub, but did enjoy the views of mountains and stars from the deck. Although there is a phone in the cabin, we were happy that both our AT&T and T-Mobile phones had good service there. Since my husband and I spent a good bit of time inside with the baby, it was also nice to have cable TV and Wi-Fi. The fact that the driveway is level with just a few steps into the home would make it a good location for someone with difficulty getting around. We had originally hoped that my elderly parents would be able to join us. With everything they would need on the first floor, they would have been able to manage just fine. Maybe they can join us the next visit. Geoff, the owner, and John, the realtor, made it easy to handle the rental arrangements. The email Geoff sent filled with links and info on things to do in the area was greatly appreciated. Our daughter and son-in-law made good use of it exploring waterfalls, hiking trails on the Parkway and a trip to Clingman's Dome while we stayed at the cabin enjoying the company of our grandson. We did all get out one day for a trip to see the 360 degree views from Max Patch Bald. We also discovered an overlook on the way down to Cataloochee that was perfect for watching the sunset over the Smokies. Thank you, Geoff!"Guest: Spoon Date of Stay: June 2014 Review Submitted: June 21, 2014View listing
"Looking for a fantastic cabin in Maggie Valley? This is it. It's off the beaten trail surrounded by woods and by a running river. Hummingbirds are frequent visitors at the feeder on the covered wooden porch. On the porch you can relax in the rocking chairs, eat your meals at the small personal table, or treat yourself to a good soak in the hot tub. The inside of the cabin is spotless. You have the responsibility of leaving it the way you find it, so in order to preserve the cleanliness guests should and have (based on our experience) accepted that responsibility. It is one of the few places we have stayed where we felt we did not have to wash the dishes before beginning to use them….There is a charcoal grill and a cozy fire pit down by the river. We stayed busy hiking and exploring. The location is great, too- plenty to do for all types. It is a perfect anniversary or honeymoon spot. Cozy, comfortable and quiet. And, as all other reviewers have noted, a fresh lemon poppy seed loaf awaits you in the fridge upon arrival!"Guest: Sandy Date of Stay: August 2014 Review Submitted: August 18, 2014View listing
"My family (ages 14yrs-70yrs) stayed here last month. We love this house. We have decided to make this a yearly family tradition. The house is beautiful and the homeowners made it feel like home. The adults and kids alike enjoyed the hot tub, pool table, checkerboard games, books, cooking smores on the firepit in the backyard. I know I am leaving out so much. This house is a home away from home. We loved the central location and enjoyed white water rafting, sliding rock, looking for elk, antique shopping, picking apples and peaches, and hiking. There are many activities for every season: Thank you Shelda."Guest: Christy Boone Date of Stay: August 2014 Review Submitted: August 27, 2014View listing
