Overview of Catawba Island Vacation Rentals
Finding Your Way to Catawba Island Vacation Rentals
Catawba Island is a small township community on Lake Erie in Ohio. The township is just a short drive away from the Eerie Ottawa Regional Airport; it is a public airport but it does not host commercial flights. The nearest major airport is in Cleveland which is approximately 70 miles away. The Cleveland Hopkins International Airport hosts most major commercial carriers in North America and has frequently scheduled flights to the major cities in the U.S. This would be the airport you would use if traveling from an international destination or from across the states.
A second smaller airport that is closer to Catawba Island is the Toledo Express Airport which is located 10 miles west of the city of Toledo on the far western point of Lake Erie. The airport hosts a variety of commercial airlines on regular regional flight schedules. Most visitors to Catawba Island are from Ohio and the neighboring states of Indiana and Michigan. There is a good road network and driving to your vacation home is one of the most convenient ways to get there. If you do happen to be flying in, you can always arrange a rental car upon arrival.
Best Time of Year to Visit Catawba Island Vacation Houses
Catawba Island is mostly a summer vacation destination. It is popular with water sports and fishing enthusiasts because of its easy access to Lake Erie. The summer days are generally warm and temperatures remain mild overnight. The summer starts in early June and generally lasts until September. The peak vacation period is during July. In the winter months, the area becomes iced over. Heavy snowfalls can occur in the mid-winter months. This doesn't seem to deter enthusiastic fishermen who head out on the ice to enjoy some mid-winter ice fishing. This is also a favorite time of year for snowmobilers to visit.
Things to See and Do near Catawba Island Lodging
Catawba Island is a leisurely vacation destination. Most of the activities are linked to the lake. There are several boat launches and marinas where you can store your boat for the duration of your vacation. Family recreation areas and picnic sites are often located near the boat launches so you can enjoy a fun afternoon out on the lake or along the shoreline. Some vacation homes in Catawba Island have private jetties where you can tie up you boat. This will save you the time and effort of heading off to the boat launch each time you want to head out on the water. If you don't have your own boat, it is often possible to rent a boat from one of the marinas. If you are a newcomer to boating, it's advisable to arrange a charter where an experienced skipper can take you out on the water.
Fishing is one of the most popular activities. You can either fish from the shoreline or on a boat if you want to land the larger species. If you want to spend some time exploring the region, there are many historic places of interest. If you take a drive to the Marblehead Peninsula, you can see Ohio's oldest lighthouse which has been in operation since 1820. This lighthouse has saved countless lives as the area is known to be one of the roughest on Lake Erie in terms of boating and shipping.
