Today, it is giant recreational area located in one of Ohio’s oldest state parks and covers an area of 13,500 acres. The main town on the lake, Celina, is located approximately 100 miles north of Cincinnati. To get there, it is approximately a two-hour drive. Most visitors to the lake come from the surrounding regions. Aside from Cincinnati, many families travel from Indianapolis or Ft. Wayne in Indiana or from Columbus or Dayton in Ohio. The nearest regional airport is in Ft. Wayne which is approximately an hour’s drive from the lake. Alternate airports are Indianapolis or Cincinnati which are both approximately a two-hour drive from the area.

The Lake Loramie State Park is located on the southeastern part of the lake. It is a haven for a number of species of migratory waterfowl. Other forms of wildlife that are found in the park include white-tailed deer, coyote, beaver, squirrel, mink and raccoons. The park has a variety of different habitats which incorporate woodlands, wetland and prairies. A 47-mile section of the Buckeye hiking trail starts at Lake Loramie and traverses within a mile of the Grand Lake St. Marys State Park. This section of the trail is known as the Miami Eerie Trail.

If you plan on fishing, be sure to pack your rods and tackle when heading to the lake for your vacation. Supplies can be found in Celina but it’s best to have your own gear. In order to make fishing more convenient, there are bait vending stations on the lakeshore. Hunting is permitted in designated areas around the lake. A valid Ohio hunting and waterfowl stamp is required.
Boating enthusiasts have five state-operated boat launches to choose from. There are an additional seven private launch ramps along the lake’s shoreline. If you are planning on spending your summer vacation at the lake, it may be more convenient to hire a seasonal mooring on one of the docks. This will save you the hassle of having to launch your boat every time you want to go out on the water.
Other fun family recreational activities include swimming and picnicking along the shoreline. There are several designated picnic areas that have barbecue facilities and tables. Some picnic sites can be reserved and if you are a large party, it may be a good idea to do this in peak season. Bike rentals are available at some of the campgrounds and there are miles of trails to explore around the lakeshore. You can also enjoy a variety of hiking trails in the area.
