Middle Bass Island Travel Tips

Finding Your Way to Middle Bass Island Vacation Rentals

Middle Bass Island is an island in Lake Eerie, Ohio. The only way for passengers to access the island is by ferry from Catawba Island. The main ferry route is known as the Miller Ferry. Catawba Island is located at the end of Route 53, approximately 40 miles east of Toledo or 70 miles west from Cleveland, Ohio. The Miller Ferry transports most things to the island, including supplies. Their freight section will handle transportation of vehicles and other household goods if you plan to stay a while but you need to arrange this in advance.

For travelers that are not from the region, you will need to fly into either Cleveland or Toledo. From there, you can hire a car and drive up to Catawba Island. Once there, you can arrange your ferry ride across to the island. An alternative way to get to the island is from Put-in-Bay on the Jet Express and Sonny-S. These ferries are usually used by day trippers but they run later in the evening than the Miller Ferry. If you arrive after 7 p.m. then you can use this as an alternate way to get to Middle Bass Island. Be aware though that the other two ferries are smaller and therefore cannot accommodate vehicles. Once on the island, you won’t really need your car. Driving is permitted on island roads but most people get around using golf carts or bicycles instead.

Things to Do at Ohio Vacation Rentals on Middle Bass Island

For many decades, Middle Bass Island was known as one of the winery islands. The most famous winery was the Lonz Winery. The winery was one of the most famous sites on the island and attracted many visitors each year. In 2000, a tragic accident resulted in a death of one person and injury of several others when a terrace collapsed. Shortly thereafter, the winery closed. The great mansion still stands on the property but today the estate has been incorporated into the Middle Bass Lake Island State Park. The park was founded in 2001 and is home to a wide variety of wildlife including many birds and reptiles. Visitors can enjoy nature walks through the park and birdwatching. Another favorite pastime on the island is fishing. There are many places along the shoreline where you can set up your rod and enjoy a relaxing day staring out over the lake.
