Mohican State Park is over 1,100 acres of recreation area within the 4,795 acres of Mohican National Forest. It is conveniently located just a 90-minute drive from Columbus Ohio, with its international airport. By car, it is within easy access of Interstate 71, US Highway 250 and sits on State Route 3. Mohican State Park lodging here is perfect for a vacation in a tranquil forest setting.
Mohican State Park Vacation Houses in an Historic Hunting Ground
Mohican State Park vacation rentals are in a region of wonderful natural beauty. Long ago, the park was a hunting ground for Delaware Indians. The forests around these homes are full of buckeye, dogwood, sycamore and willow. Higher up on the ridges are a variety of oaks, white pine and red maple. Wildlife lovers will enjoy watching for fox, possum, white tailed deer and raccoons, and reptiles such as black rat snake and box turtles. There are also salamanders, grey tree frogs and toads that children will enjoy hunting for. Here, also wild turkeys are found in increasing numbers and if visitors are very lucky, they may even see a bald eagle.
Attractions such as the Wolf Creek/Pine Run Grist Mill welcome visitors for tours. The mill dates from 1831 and sits next to Pine Run stream. The mill is currently being restored. At Malabar Farm State Park, visitors can tour the home of author Louis Bromfield who farmed this area and take a wagon tour of the farm. Fowler Woods State Nature Preserve, off State Route 13, is a variety of swamp forest and beach-maple forest. It is particularly beautiful in spring, with an incredible display of spring flowers. Visitors here are welcome to canoe the river and, in winter, it offers downhill skiing.
Other attractions nearby include the Amish and Mennonite Heritage Center. This center offers visitors the opportunity to learn more about the history and way of life maintained by the Amish and Mennonites in this area. It is worth visiting to see the 265-foot "in the round" mural featuring the traditional life of both. There is also Biblewalk, a wax museum with life-size waxworks of biblical scenes. The Cleo Redd Fisher Museum features collections of porcelain and memorabilia. It also features locally produced antique rifles. Visitors will also enjoy the 10-mile long drive of the Wally Road Scenic Byway.
There Are Many Trails to Explore in Mohican State Park
There are many trails surrounding Mohican State Park vacation houses. The Lyons Fall Trail is a two-mile, easy route which follows Clear Fork Gorge where the main features of the trail are two wonderful waterfalls. There are several short, one-mile hikes, such as Songbird, Grist Mill and the North Rim. Those seeking a more challenging hike will want to try Hemlock Gorge which is a tough two miles but worth the effort to explore the wooden bridge. Two multi-purpose trails allow both bikers and hikers. These are the Mountain Bike trail and Hog Hollow. Equestrians will enjoy the bridle trails set aside for them. Among these are Grouse, Pine Run and the Snowmobile trails. To enjoy getting onto the water, visitors should go to the Clearfork of Mohican River, which is known as one of the best rivers for canoeing in the state.
