The Elmore Depot and Mattie Heckman Log House is a memorial to the pioneer days that opens by appointment. In Sandusky, the Follett House Museum hosts an exhibition of local artifacts from the Civil War period, including Johnson’s Island Civil War Prison Camp. Kelleys Island is home to the largest glacial grooves in the world and visitors are welcome to explore the fossils left behind from the Pleistocene Glaciers. Step back into the 19th century at Historic Lyme Village to tour this old town, including a farmhouse, log cabins, school and general store. Those interested in the maritime history of the area will enjoy Inland Seas Maritime Museum. This museum is great for children, with hands-on exhibits, model ships and the chance to explore shipwrecks. Johnson’s Island is home to the Confederate Officers Prison, Cemetery and Museum. Over 9,000 Confederate soldiers were held here and the cemetery is the final resting place for some 200.
