The nearest major airport is 45 miles from Sandusky at Cleveland Hopkins International Airport. The area is also serviced by Amtrak and Greyhound via Route 250 in nearby Perkins Township. The weather here includes hot humid summers and cold winters.

History and Theme Parks in One Location

While Sandusky is doubtlessly famed for its theme parks, the area around Sandusky vacation rentals is also steeped in history. From 1794, the area was a British military and trading post, originally known as Fort Sandusky. It was also a significant part of the underground railroad, the route used by slaves seeking freedom by crossing Lake Erie to Canada. Now vacationers flock here to visit one of the country’s oldest amusement parks, Cedar Park Amusement Park for its 16 roller coasters and 68 other rides. Take children to visit Lagoon Deer Park, where deer, llamas, miniature donkeys and sheep are happy to be petted and fed. Here, visitors can enjoy a peaceful afternoon fishing in the lagoons for bass, catfish, perch and trout. At Washington Park, visitors can make the most of an old limestone quarry that is now stunning parkland.

A Wealth of Fun Activities for Everyone

Visitors to Sandusky lodging may also enjoy visiting the wide variety of museums in the area, such as the Thomas A. Edison Birthplace Museum, where this famous inventor’s life is commemorated. The history of the area's nautical history is remembered at the Maritime Museum. A fascinating look at the history of merry-go-rounds is found at the Museum of Carousel Art and History. Another trip is to Cooke Castle where the 19th-century mansion home of Jay Cooke is currently being restored.

While here, visitors can also explore the many islands in Lake Erie. At Kelleys Island, just 12 miles from Sandusky, visitors can choose to rent bikes or take a golf cart around the area stopping off at the great shops and admiring the scenery. Here, visitors can also fish, swim, hike or rent a kayak to discover the island’s coastline. Kelleys Island is listed on the National Register of Historic Places and visitors should not miss seeing the famous Glacial Grooves National Landmark. On Middle Bass Island, visitors will enjoy the wildlife refuge and historic buildings. Put-in-Bay/South Bass Island is the place for some great cave tours, miniature golf, a chocolate museum and much more. Those looking for outdoor activities can join a charter fishing trip, try parasailing, or rent bikes, kayaks or even wave runners. There are also many historic buildings here and visitors may find Perry’s Victory and International Peace Memorial of interest. This is America’s third tallest memorial as it stands 352 feet tall. There is also the Lake Erie Islands Historical Society Museum, Doller House and Stonehenge Estate. Before heading back to Sandusky vacation rentals, be sure to visit the winery and microbrewery.

There are a wide variety of restaurants, from well known national chains to small, local ones offering a wide selection of great food, including international cuisine.
