Overview of Eastern Oregon Vacation Rentals
Visit Snow-Topped Mountains and Deserts in One Vacation at Eastern Oregon Vacation Rentals
From its early history as a remote, inaccessible region, Eastern Oregon is now easily to reach with an excellent road system. Visitors to Eastern Oregon lodging now use Interstate 84 or Interstate 82. From north to south, US Route 395 is an ideal road, and there are also other major roads such as US Routes 20, 26, 30 and 97.
Eastern Oregon has a drier, more continental climate than most of the state. The region receives significantly more snow in winter and has areas classified as "deserts" due to the lack of rainfall. It is a region of contrasts.
Eastern Oregon Vacation Houses near Millions of Years of History
Eastern Oregon vacation rentals are surrounded by a wealth of attractions to fill every vacation day. Visit the 14,000-acre John Day Fossil Beds National Monument to explore the three areas of Painted Hills, Sheep Rock and Clarno where you can view fossils dating back some 65 million years. An ideal place for children is the Thomas Condon Paleontology Center at Sheep Rock where the interactive exhibits will enthrall and teach children about the animals that roamed this region millions of years ago. To explore the history of the early settlers to Eastern Oregon, visit the National Historic Oregon Trail Interpretive Center. The center features exhibits and living history performances to bring to life the journey and hardships of the pioneers.
To discover more about the life of Native Americans, visit the Tamastslikt Cultural Institute where exhibits include the story of three native tribes--the Cayuse, Walla Walla and Umatilla. At Pendleton Underground Tours, visitors can discover the infamous past of the area’s once major town. Children will also enjoy the Eagle Cap Excursion Train that runs from Elgin to Joseph. This 63-mile journey takes visitors through the stunning scenery of the Grande Ronde River, Wallowa River and Valley and on to the Wallowa Mountains. The internment of Japanese Americans during World War II is commemorated at the Four Rivers Cultural Center, and at the Kam Wah Chung Museum, the role of Chinese immigrants is celebrated. Among other museums here are the Chinese House Railroad Museum, Cracker Creek Museum of Mining, and the Eastern Oregon Fire Museum. There are also 13 ghost towns to be explored, including Auburn, Cornucopia, Galena and Horse Haven.
Mile After Mile of Wilderness near Eastern Oregon Vacation Homes
One of the major attractions to Eastern Oregon vacation houses is the vast wilderness and the variety of outdoor recreation activities within easy distance. During the winter, the region is renowned for downhill and cross country skiing, snowboarding, snowshoeing and snowmobiling. During the summer, it becomes a haven for backpackers, hikers, anglers, and mountain bikers. There are horseback riding trails and parks with areas for ATVs. The region's lakes, rivers and reservoirs provide excellent areas for swimming, fishing, boating, and whitewater rafting.
Scattered around the region are wonderful local restaurants, serving locally grown and reared produce. Local menus may include such treats as buffalo, elk and venison.
Eastern Oregon Lodging Includes Simply Wonderful Homes
