Overview of Mt. Hood, The Gorge Vacation Rentals
Winter Snow at Mt. Hood
Mt. Hood is a premier ski destination in Oregon with five expansive ski resorts and many different snow activities available. There's something for everyone in the family to enjoy including alpine skiing, cross country skiing, Nordic skiing, snowboarding, snowmobiling, snowshoeing, and snow play at the various resorts and parks. If traveling to the area in wintertime, choose from the Mt. Hood vacation rentals that are located near the resorts. This will give you easy access to the ski lifts.
The five ski resorts of Timberline Lodge and Ski Area, Mt. Hood Meadows Ski Area, Mt. Hood Ski Bowl Area, Summit Ski Area and Ski Bunny, and Cooper Spur Ski & Recreation Center all have a wide range of ski slopes, cross country and snowmobiling trails, pipes and snow play parks. There are daily fun activities for the kids, ski schools and festive après ski options.
Mt. Hood Lodging Options
The area of Mt. Hood and Columbia River Gorge is scenically beautiful in summer, spring, winter or fall. Accommodation options range from small, cozy wood cabins for two to large spacious homes that can accommodate two or three families. Regardless of the size of your rental home, all are comfortable and well-equipped, ensuring that you feel right at home. Because it's such a popular winter destination, many Mt. Hood cottages are equipped with fireplaces where you can snuggle down with some hot chocolate after a tiring day out on the slopes. The mountain vistas make you want to never head back to city life and many visitors return regularly to their favorite spots. If visiting in the summertime, you may want to look at the option of river-front homes. They tend to be spacious and many have canoes or small fishing boats so that you can explore the waterways.
Traveling to Mt. Hood
The closest major city is Portland which is approximately 50 miles by road. The Portland International Airport is served by all major national and regional airlines which makes access to Mt. Hood convenient. On arrival, you can hire a car and drive yourself to Mt. Hood or make use of one of the many shuttle bus services and public transit coaches. Amtrak rail will take you as far as Portland or Oregon City and from there, you can connect on to Mt. Hood using the bus service. Within the Mt. Hood area, there are several good shuttle bus services that you can use to get around to the various resorts. Seasonal passes can be purchased and are relatively affordable.
Summertime Exploring
When the snow melts, the region opens up to whole range of outdoor recreation activities. Commercial whitewater rafting trips are run on the Sandy, Clackamas, and Deschutes Rivers and loads of fun. River trails and kayaking trips can also be arranged. Fishing is a popular pastime and equipment can be hired from local resorts. The Mt. Hood National Forest is a mountain biker's dream. With miles of winding single track trails, you can enjoy days of awesome riding. Hiking is a popular summertime activity and horseback rides can also be arranged.
The Mt. Hood area has a rich historical heritage and the many museums, interest centers and historical sites provide some great insight into the lives of the early pioneers. Take a day out to explore. You will appreciate the conveniences of modern life when you see pictures of the early towns and hear the personal stories as recorded in journals of settlers that came to make Oregon their home.
