Gorgeous house, but NO CELL SERVICE available at this location
"This house and property--is gorgeous! The biggest problem we had here--this house has NO CELL SERVICE! It must be too far back in the woods. It ended up being a very important glitch in our visit, as two families had emergency family issues come up and communication was a BIG problem. Some of us were able to send iMessages on our iPhones, but those people who had Android phones were even out of luck on being able to send text messages. The wifi/internet service in the house is very slow and the modem is outdated, which is what I believe caused the problem with the texting (there wasn't even enough bandwidth to FaceTime). The slow wifi also caused issues with our tablets and laptops working slowly. There was only ONE landline phone in the kitchen (for this huge house). Even though we were able to make and receive long distance calls on that landline, it was very inconvenient. While I realize a lot of people go on vacation to get away from it all and relax, in this day and age, we still depend on our cell phones and need communication and working, modern wifi.
Pros: lovely house set back in the woods; plenty of seating for meal time and pots, pans, and dinnerware; huge master bath with a beautiful huge tub; wrap around porch; all kinds of wildlife; fire pit and BBQ grill; most of the beds were comfortable and had nice linens; towels were thick and soft. Lots of comfy chairs, games and DVDs around.
Cons: upkeep on this property is lacking. The shower curtain in the master bath had mildew all over it (as did the one downstairs) and it was dirty in other spots in the bathroom (the maid service is not doing a good job of cleaning) and light bulbs were out in lamps. We didn't have enough towels to go around. There were only 2 TVs, and their satellite TV had minimal channels on it (again, if it's raining outside--you need to do something). There were minimal nightstands and bedroom furniture to store our clothes. Some of the chairs on the porch were broken in spots. The sprayer attachment on the kitchen sink didn't work, & we didn't have a clean dish rag or sponge to wash dishes with (only a very dirty sponge which we refused to use).
This is a nice play to stay--but the owners really need to do some upkeep. The lack of cell service was a dealbreaker for us; and, by the way, this place is a good 20 minutes outside of Gettysburg, not the 8 minutes we were told. Even though it was lovely, it was quite a drive out there. I'd stay somewhere else next time."

"We loved our stay at Sylvan Retreat. It is a great place to get away from the craziness of life and enjoy the family. Our 1 year old LOVED exploring the grounds. Perfect Vacaction! And a big thank you to Phil for having the high chair, pack and play, and baby bath ready for us."

"My husband and I recently stayed at Dan & Lena's guest house, with our 3 daughters (ages 1, 6 and 11). Dan & Lena were very helpful and accomodating as we traveled with children. They supplied a pack-n-play for our youngest daughter, and had cereal, milk, & water available when we arrived. Our girls loved playing on the swings, watching the animals on the farm, watching the horse & buggies as they went by, playing in the sandbox and taking a tour of the farm with Dan. The guest house was extremely clean and close to all local attractions. We look forward to coming for another visit!"

"I want to begin by thanking Miriam and her family for allowing us to stay at their beautiful guest house for the weekend. we came upon this house as we were seeking places to stay while exploring all the lovely activities Lancaster has to offer. We came with our two children and another couple and their three children. From the moment we pulled up the drive way, we were blown away. The property itself is beautifully maintained and is home to not only Miriam and her family but a family of sheep, horses, donkeys, chickens and some cows! Not only did my children go crazy with excitement to see all that, but the parents were too! The guest house, unbelievable. Beautifully decorated with warm, rustic touches, the house presents itself as very warm and welcoming. Our children frolicked on the property, playing on the playground and following sandy the pony around while we sat on the porch relaxing soaking up the fresh air. I would highly recommend this property to rent for any family looking to relax in a beautiful atmosphere. Miriam and her family were extremely accommodating and so sweet, we look forward to coming back in the near future!"
