The nearest major airport to Erie, PA is the Erie International Airport which is just six miles from Erie itself. The main communities in the Great Lakes area are Erie itself, Conneaut Lake and North East with its beachfront location. Lake Erie itself is one of the main attractions in the Great Lakes area. For history lovers, the Lake Erie Maritime Museum recalls the local involvement in the War of 1812. The reconstruction of the U.S. Brig “Niagara” is docked in the port during the summer and gives interesting tours. The downtown bayfront area has been redeveloped around the Bicentennial Tower and Dobbins Landing.

The quaint town of North East is the heart of the wine-growing district. It also has many unique shops and restaurants and is a great place to visit.

The Great Lakes area of Pennsylvania is affected by its close proximity to Lake Erie. During the winter, it is very cold with lake-effect snowstorms. However, the summer months are beautifully warm and sunny with temperatures in the 70s Fahrenheit. July is the warmest month when average daily highs are 80 F (26 C). Rainfall is fairly even spread throughout the year with a total of 42 inches.
