The memorial is maintained by local residents until a permanent memorial is built.
The Meadowcroft Rockshelter and Museum of Rural Life in Washington County is a National Historic Landmark. This 200-acre area includes a recreated 19th-century village. A section of US-40, the first federally funded road, runs past an array of historic sites like Fort Necessity, General Braddock’s Grave and includes some wonderful stagecoach stops. Fort Necessity commemorates the first battle in the career of one very famous American, George Washington. Visitors should not overlook a trip to Titusville to visit the first oil well in the U.S. The museum and park here include a full scale replica of the well, and the train tour gives a chance to learn more while seeing the sights. Kids will love the Trolley Museum and McConnell’s Mill State park provides great hiking in the gorge; it features a 1870s' style covered bridge as well as beautiful scenery, including waterfalls.
