"I'm a bit late with this review, as we stayed here for a week over a month ago, but I didn't want to miss the chance to say how great it was. The location is ideal, steps from the main drag in Newport, so walking distance to just about anywhere. The house itself is as described, a wonderful cottage-type residence that is furnished with everything you could possibly need, in the kitchen and throughout. The stairs are somewhat steep, so be aware if that might be a problem for you. If we return to Newport, we'd go back to this house in a second! Thanks, Chris!"Guest: Steve Date of Stay: August 2014 Review Submitted: September 27, 2014View listing
"Murray House was the perfect getaway home to explore the beauty of Newport! My sister and I were looking for mini-getaway to relax, rejuvenate, rest, and reflect while visiting the attractions of Newport. Murray house was a gem in providing us a comfortable, clean, peaceful, enjoyable stay. We stayed in the Garden View Room and loved our stay so much that we extended our visit an extra night. The location was amazing and the hospitality of Noreen and her helpers was very much appreciated. We walked to the beach each day, visited the mansions up the street from the B&B, got to swim in the pool, had morning coffee in our private garden space, and ate at many of the local restaurants that were recommended by Noreen. A warm & delicious breakfast was served each day and the rooms were thoroughly cleaned daily. The room was spacious and had a mini-kitchen space that allowed us to prepare some meals in the room. Prior to our arrival, I checked reviews on HomeAway and TripAdvisor and I can confidently say that the reviews and pictures were accurate. My sister and I definitely plan to visit again and will continue to tell people about this wonderful B&B that we were so lucky to discover! If you are traveling to Newport where most of the accommodations are Bed & Breakfast Stays...this is a quality place to stay! Enjoy!!"Guest: Bridget L. "Party of 7 adults came for sailing week, for 6 nights. Cant say any more great things about the property, or the owner. Rebecca made us feel welcome from the moment of arrival. She was happy to answer any questions we had about the area, take phone calls at any time, & gave us restaurant suggestions as well as what sights to see while in the area. The property itself is very well maintained with an enormous patio out back. We spent many an evening grilling out, watching the sunset - private, quiet & relaxed - just what we needed after long days of sailing. The kitchen is STUNNING & large - I believe it was newly redone with all appliances & high end granite. All the rooms & bathrooms were meticulously clean. We had 3 couples , 1 in each of the upstairs bedrooms, & a single in the 4th main floor bedroom. There is a pull out couch available, but he used the Queen blow up mattress provided & was very comfortable. There are surprisingly 2 very large bathrooms, so we had no issues with space. Its a 5-7 minute walk to the beach, & easily accessible to quite a few restaurants. You could go to Ellery House for a week & never use your car! I cant think of any complaints except maybe that there are window A/c's in each room, instead of central air. But at this time of year, we didn't need any air at all, with the ocean breeze! We already have discussed booking a week again next year. Thank you Rebecca!"Guest: Sailing crew Date of Stay: September 2014 Review Submitted: September 30, 2014View listing
"We really loved the house and especially the LOCATION. What a great location in Newport! We walked to almost everything we wanted to visit....the harbor, restaurants, the beach, the cliff walk. The rooms in the house itself were well decorated, very clean, comfortable, and in great condition. Parking was also easy thanks to the reserved driveway and parking passes. Our only challenge was getting the internet to work which we managed to figure out part way through our stay. Gary was very helpful and did his best to make our stay agreeable. I would definitely recommend this place to others and would stay here again."Guest: Margot Date of Stay: August 2014 Review Submitted: September 8, 2014View listing
Newport Travel Tips
Enjoy Traditional Sporting Activities at Newport
Rhode Island has a very colonial feel about it and Newport is no exception. Majestic buildings, stylish country clubs and classy summer events give testament to the fact that the island is still very much a playground for the wealthy. Lawn tennis, golf, and summer polo tournaments are enjoyed as lavish affairs. Sailing is one of the area's most popular pastimes and Newport is frequently referred to as the sailing capital of the world. On a summer's day, you can see the bay dotted with colorful sails. Boats are available for charter from the local marina and there's no better way to enjoy a lazy summer afternoon with friends than to sip ice-cold drinks as you cruise across the water. In recent years, surfing, kite boarding and paddling have also become popular pastimes.
Best Time of Year to Stay at Newport Vacation Rentals
Primarily a summer destination, many activities center around the beachfront and harbor. There are numerous events and festivals throughout the summer months to keep visitors entertained. Often rentals offer special reduced rates for wintertime. If you're looking for a quiet getaway where you can snuggle up in front of the fireplace and enjoy the ocean views, Newport is a great destination to consider.
Shopping and Sightseeing in Newport
If the ideal vacation includes browsing antique stores and art galleries then you will love exploring the Newport area. Home to many famous artists, stylish paintings are a great souvenir to take home with you. Many galleries also feature excellent photographic exhibits if you have more modern tastes. For outdoor enthusiasts, you can hire bicycles and ride on the island's many paths and quiet roads. Take a casual early morning stroll along the beach or visit one of the state parks and see the historic landmark lighthouses. The Newport Harbor and Yachting Museum reflect the strong yachting traditions of Newport and are interesting to visit.
The area produces some excellent wines. Touring the wine farms, you'll have an opportunity to taste and possibly even meet with the wine-makers. Combine that with sampling some local cuisine in many of the fine local restaurants with seafood delicacies and delicious desserts, and you'll be rolling home if you're not careful.
Getting to and Around Newport
The nearest airport is TF Green International airport in Warwick, just north of Providence. However, because of its location between New York and Boston, many visitors flying in from across the states choose to route via one of the larger city airports and then commute the remaining distance by car, ferry or rail. The main Amtrak line travels via Rhode Island en route to Boston from New York. Stopping at Westerly and Kingston, travelers can then connect onto Newport by bus. In the summer months, there is a regular ferry connection between Newport and Providence. By road the Interstate 95 links Providence to the major east coast cities. Driving time from Boston to Newport is approximately 90 minutes and from New York City lodging about four hours. Regular bus services offer an alternate and affordable way of getting to your Newport accommodation.
Stylish Newport Lodging
Rhode Island is well-known for its elegant architectural style and the colonial mansions add majesty to the coastal landscape. Accommodation rental options range from cozy apartments in the harbor to opulent homes that can accommodate up to 20 people. If you have a large or extended family and like vacationing together, this is the perfect option for you. You'll feel like you have a private boutique hotel all to yourselves. Stylishly furnished and fully equipped, these homes will spoil and pamper you yet still give you the freedom to come and go as you please.
