Overview of Newport Vacation Rentals
Enjoy Traditional Sporting Activities at Newport
Rhode Island has a very colonial feel about it and Newport is no exception. Majestic buildings, stylish country clubs and classy summer events give testament to the fact that the island is still very much a playground for the wealthy. Lawn tennis, golf, and summer polo tournaments are enjoyed as lavish affairs. Sailing is one of the area's most popular pastimes and Newport is frequently referred to as the sailing capital of the world. On a summer's day, you can see the bay dotted with colorful sails. Boats are available for charter from the local marina and there's no better way to enjoy a lazy summer afternoon with friends than to sip ice-cold drinks as you cruise across the water. In recent years, surfing, kite boarding and paddling have also become popular pastimes.
Best Time of Year to Stay at Newport Vacation Rentals
Primarily a summer destination, many activities center around the beachfront and harbor. There are numerous events and festivals throughout the summer months to keep visitors entertained. Often rentals offer special reduced rates for wintertime. If you're looking for a quiet getaway where you can snuggle up in front of the fireplace and enjoy the ocean views, Newport is a great destination to consider.
Shopping and Sightseeing in Newport
If the ideal vacation includes browsing antique stores and art galleries then you will love exploring the Newport area. Home to many famous artists, stylish paintings are a great souvenir to take home with you. Many galleries also feature excellent photographic exhibits if you have more modern tastes. For outdoor enthusiasts, you can hire bicycles and ride on the island's many paths and quiet roads. Take a casual early morning stroll along the beach or visit one of the state parks and see the historic landmark lighthouses. The Newport Harbor and Yachting Museum reflect the strong yachting traditions of Newport and are interesting to visit.
The area produces some excellent wines. Touring the wine farms, you'll have an opportunity to taste and possibly even meet with the wine-makers. Combine that with sampling some local cuisine in many of the fine local restaurants with seafood delicacies and delicious desserts, and you'll be rolling home if you're not careful.
Getting to and Around Newport
The nearest airport is TF Green International airport in Warwick, just north of Providence. However, because of its location between New York and Boston, many visitors flying in from across the states choose to route via one of the larger city airports and then commute the remaining distance by car, ferry or rail. The main Amtrak line travels via Rhode Island en route to Boston from New York. Stopping at Westerly and Kingston, travelers can then connect onto Newport by bus. In the summer months, there is a regular ferry connection between Newport and Providence. By road the Interstate 95 links Providence to the major east coast cities. Driving time from Boston to Newport is approximately 90 minutes and from New York City lodging about four hours. Regular bus services offer an alternate and affordable way of getting to your Newport accommodation.
Stylish Newport Lodging
Rhode Island is well-known for its elegant architectural style and the colonial mansions add majesty to the coastal landscape.
