Some Interesting Information on Sullivan’s Island Lodging

Sullivan’s Island is a beautiful barrier island located just north of Charleston Harbor with a small full-time population, making Sullivan’s Island lodging ideal for a relaxed family vacation. Part of the charm of renting Sullivan’s Island condos is that you can rest assured that you are not setting foot into a tourist trap as there are no transient lodging options such as hotels, motels, bed-and-breakfasts, and the like. With Charleston beach rentals on Sullivan's Island, you get the true island experience without the maddening throngs of tourists.

You Cannot Stay in Charleston Rentals Without Seeing the Lighthouse

It is virtually impossible to book Charleston rentals without making time to see the New Charleston Lighthouse. It was built in 1962 and is truly a one-of-a-kind lighthouse as no other like it exists in the United States. Towering 162 feet and fitted with the most powerful candlepower lens, it can be seen from as far as 26 miles away. It was built to replace the old lighthouse, which was eroded. It is actually about one-quarter mile out to sea. It is worth mentioning that this lighthouse will not look anything like any lighthouse you have ever seen; it looks more like an airport control tower. It is definitely worth a visit and not far from most Sullivan’s Island condos.

Sullivan’s Island Condos Nestled in a Bit of Charleston History

The town itself was incorporated in 1817 and was then called Moultrieville. Since its incorporation, not much has changed as far as the requirements. There are no lean-tos or shacks, and all lots must consist of at least one-half acre. This is perhaps why so many of these Charleston rentals are so pristine. Other historic city regulations require the protection of the natural environment, especially along the coast. Additionally, the island was a long time military barrier against invaders, so across the island you may see such remnants. Some previous fortifications may even be Sullivan’s Island lodging options!

Old Fort Moultrie near Sullivan’s Island Lodging

Just minutes from Sullivan’s Island condos, you can find Fort Moultrie, a particularly interesting historical site. Built during the Revolutionary War and named for its commander, it was devastated during the British attacks. Later rebuilt in 1798, it was then destroyed by an 1804 hurricane. However, it was rebuilt again and again and used during each major war the U.S. has been involved in up through WWII. If you have an interest in history, this site is worth a visit during your stay in Sullivan’s Island lodging.
