"The unit was very clean, nicely decorated, and had plenty of room for 4 or more adults. The kitchen was well-stocked with cook-ware, oven, microwave, coffee machine, plates, cups, spoons, etc. The bedrooms had plenty of natural light and comfortable beds. The bathrooms were clean and no plumbing issues (i.e. clogged drains because of sand from the previous renter) The 2 decks back up to the lagoon, which provided shade and a daily chorus of birds chirping.
Location: The unit is in "The Moorings" section of Palmetto Dunes. It is hard to see on Googlemaps but picture the Marriott hotel at the center of the Dunes, with a north residential side and southern condo side. The Moorings is one of the few condo places on the northern side and is only a 2 minute walk to the beach. When you get to the beach, if you walk 15 steps to the north, there are very few people, but if you stay at the southern side of the Dunes, the beach is more crowded. Space on the beach is important, esp. if you are going to be there during high tide. The beach is flat, with a sand bar that extends far offshore. During low tide, the beach is very wide, flat and hard, which makes it great for walking, running, or biking. During high tide, the beach is 75% smaller so space is limited.
Biking: I would recommend contacting HiltonHeadBikes.com to rent cruiser bikes while on the island. They deliver the bikes to your condo and give you a bike lock. The price is much more reasonable than daily rentals at other places. You can ride on the beach, ride on bike paths, ride to the grocery store, etc. Since the island is flat, the riding is easy. Also check out savannahbiketours.com for an easy way to tour the city (1 hr away).
Beach: The unit does not come with umbrellas or sand chairs. So if you did not bring your own, I would recommend contacting shorebeach.com to rent an umbrella/chairs. The beach patrol sets up the umbrella for you (which is tough in the hard, flat sand) and the chairs are comfortable. For about $20 a day, you can know that you've got a place on the beach with a working umbrella that won't tip over in the wind.
Island Perspective: Hilton Head Island is not your typical beach experience. If you hear the word "beach" and think "strip malls, boardwalk, concrete, loud music, etc.", then Hilton Head Island will surprise you. There are tree-lined streets, lots of trees, minimal concrete, & no tall condos to block the skyline. Great place!"
