  • Staying here made the Marine Graduation Experience Perfect!

"We came up from Saint Augustine, FL to attend our son's Marine Boot Camp Graduation! Loved the house, the island, the community and the kids loved the golf carts. Can't wait to visit again."

  • Perfect stay on Fripp!

"We highly recommend staying at the Herbert house! This was our first time using VRBO. We were invited to a wedding on Fripp and having never been there before, it became quickly apparent that we would need to rent a house. I knew I wanted a house with a water view, as well as a house that offered equal bathrooms to bedrooms. A quick search pulled up the 3 bed/3 bath Herbert House, which perfectly met these criteria. The Herbert house is located in the marina and overlooks the really beautiful marsh; the sunset views on the water are breathtaking from the back porch. It's the very first house on the street and is set farther apart from the other houses on the street, giving loads of privacy. From the house, you can walk to Bonito Boathouse for dinner, take an evening cruise, put in the kayak for a sunset dolphin trip, or take a dip in the small marina pool. It may not be the beach, but there is plenty to do! It's a quick bike ride (and even faster golf cart ride) to the golf course and beach. The house is well-equipped for you to come in and make yourself right at home. I highly recommend stopping in the Publix in Beaufort on your way in to stock up on food supplies for your stay as the Herbert kitchen is a great place to make your daily meals. There are loads of movies, books, and board games to entertain you should you want a low-key day around the house. I spent several hours happily sitting on the back patio with my cup of tea, watching the birds and deer (so many deer!) along the marsh. Extremely peaceful and stunning. The 3 bedrooms are a great feature of this house. Each bedroom has its own full bath and patio. The master has a comfy king bed and giant tub (with views!) and its own patio. It wound up being just the two of us that stayed here and we were so happy with the master bedroom. The other room on the top floor has 2 full size beds plus the room on the bottom floor has a full size bed. There is an alcove upstairs where an air mattress could be placed if needed. Plenty of towels too (both bath and beach!). We also loved that we had use of bicycles, golf cart, and a 2 person sit-on-top kayak during our stay! Most importantly, Claire. Claire was a dream come true to work with. Prompt to every inquiry (and I had a LOT!), she was very professional and kind. She made me feel very welcome to her home and she also promptly addressed issues encountered. My damage refund was promptly returned as well, which was awesome!"

  • Such a TREASURE!!!!!

"Our stay at the "Fripp Island Getaway", 44 Davis Love Drive, was PERFECT!!!! The location was wonderful and only a short walk or golf cart ride to the beach access. This cottage is well equipped for cooking, relaxing, and just hanging out. The manager was a pleasure to work with, very efficient, helpful, and accommodating. This is one lovely, peaceful place. We already miss breakfast on the screened in porch while listening to the barking tree frogs, observing the deer, and watching the golf course come to life. We highly recommend this enjoyable home. Fripp Island is a TREAT and RETREAT. It offers so much to see and do and 44 Davis Love Drive provides a grand home base."

  • Comfortable house with nice view

"This was our 2nd stay at this home. We like the house and it has most of the items you need to enjoy your stay. The home was clean and furniture was comfortable. We were staying during a quiet time and did not have many neighbors so it was very peaceful. It is located behind the Cabana pool so you do here the pool noise and water treatment system running. I believe it woould be a much noisier location at the peak of the season. This home hase 3 screened porches which was nice, since the mosqitoes were bad. We used citronella candles on a couple of occasions due to the midges (no see ums) that found their way through the screens. The house had rechargeable flash lights last year, but this year there wasn't a flashlight to be found. It would have been nice to have had a flashlight or two in the house and a beach umbrella would be a nice addition to the items provided. The one big issue we have had both times we stayed here were with the management company. Last year we arrived to find the dish washer inoperable with dirty water in the bottom of the machine. It took over a week to get the issue addressed. This year we had problems with the golf cart lights. We called on our 3rd day there and never hear from the management company. I called again at the end of the 1st week but was never contacted by the management company. We were out at the beach with the golf cart when a repir person showed up at the door. One of our party had stayed behind to read. He informed the repair person we were at the beach and he could contact us to let us know a repair person was there. The repair person said this was his last stop and he was leaving for the day. So, the golf cart never had the lights fixed. This did limit how late we could be out in the cart since you need lights to drive the cart. Sunset is a very popular time to be riding in the cart and if you spent to much time taking pictures you had to drive the cart back using a flash light (if you remmebered to bring one with you). I would stay at this home again only as a second option. I like to be able to contact the owner or the management company in the event of problems that may arise. The only thing I can say about the management company is they are not very responsive to the renter."

Fripp Island Travel Tips

Fripp Island is a gated, resort community outside of Beaufort, South Carolina. The 3,000-acre island is located at the end of a chain of sea islands and offers visitors access to a marina, golf courses, restaurants and 3.5 miles of sandy beaches in South Carolina's lowcountry.

The island is named after Captain Johannes Fripp who helped to protect the Carolina colony from Spanish attacks. Local folklore also marks the island as the spot where pirate Blackbeard hid his treasures and bounty.

Fripp Island Attractions

Hunting Island State Park sees more than 1 million visitors a year and is one of the state's most popular state parks and beach areas. There's an historic lighthouse that's the only one in the state that visitors can climb up and see breathtaking views of the ocean and surrounding area from the top. The lagoon is a highly desired fishing spot for guests as is the fishing pier that stretches 1,120 feet into the Fripp Inlet. You can check out the park's nature center where there are exhibits of local wildlife and marine life.

There are two golf courses located on Fripp Island - Ocean Point Golf Links and Ocean Creek. Ocean Point Golf Links is located along the water and 10 of the 18 holes have an ocean view. Ocean Creek has panoramic views of the Great Salt Marsh and freshwater lakes. The wildlife found throughout the golf course includes deer, egrets, blue herons and ospreys.

Water activities are a must for visitors to the island. There are sandy white beaches just waiting to be explored and warm water that's perfect for swimming or boogie boarding. You can go paddle boarding or kayak with a rental from Island Excursions if you're into water sports or simply go for a dip in the Atlantic Ocean. Lay out in the sun and catch some rays while the kids play in the water, build sand castles or play a pick-up game of beach volleyball.

For outdoor recreation, rent a golf cart, bicycle or moped to explore all that the island has to offer. You can head to the Fripp Island Marina where you can take offshore charters to go deep sea fishing or stay close to the shore with one of the marina's guides. Head to the Racquet Club or Tennis Club for an afternoon match before venturing out for dinner.

Visitors who really want an adventure should try heading out on a Dolphin Cruise or go kayaking to see strand feeding by the bottlenose dolphins that call the water off Fripp Island home. Strand feeding is where the dolphins will create a giant wave to wash fish up on the shore along the marshes and tidal creeks to capture for food. It's a synchronized motion and one of the most amazing acts of nature you can see in person.

Things to Do

Events: There are several events hosted on Fripp Island and the surrounding communities throughout the year including the Gullah Festival, Heritage Days Celebration at Penn Center, Race 4 Love, the Fall Festival of Houses and Gardens and the Beaufort Shrimp Festival. Perhaps the largest event in the area is the Beaufort Water Festival, a 10-day celebration with live entertainment, a blessing of the shrimp fleet, sports events, crafts, dances and food.

Dining: You'll find one-of-a-kind dishes on Fripp Island ranging from crab soup to lobster pot pie. Bonito Boathouse is local favorites and some of the best seafood you can find in the lowcountry. Try buttermilk fried flounder or the fresh catch of the day. Enjoy a big breakfast or lunch at Ocean Point Grille for a family-friendly meal or take in the beautiful views of Skull Inlet and Pritchard's Island at Willies Wet Bar. Other eateries on the island include The Beach Club, Ocean View Sports Bar, The Sandbar, The Marina Deli, Cabana Club Restaurant, The Food Court and The 19th Hole.

Camp Fripp: This is one for the kids. Camp Fripp is a day camp just for those between the ages of 3 and 12 that's full of activities that include learning about loggerhead sea turtles, dolphin-watching and combing the beach for seashells. Children will also learn about the real pirates from the 1600s who once inhabited the island as well as its first settlers. There's also Kid's Night Out held at the Fripp Island Resort's Activity Center where they'll eat dinner and play camp games and activities.

ARTworks: This non-profit organization on the island allows visitors and residents alike to enjoy programs that will show them what the Fripp Island art community is all about. You can take an adult art class or sign the children up for a class of their own. Galleries highlight special exhibitions each month and include artwork created by children and adults who take classes and local artists. ARTworks also presents events where the community can come together and celebrate the arts. During the summer, the organization plays host to the Beaufort Food Truck Fest featuring a variety of food trucks and other vendors from throughout the region that sell items such as lobster rolls, cupcakes and barbecue.
