"The condo was very clean. The view is breath taking. We have 2 young children and the condo and island was perfect. We like quiet and peaceful vacations. If you like to run around, hit water parks and put puts this is NOT the place for you. If you enjoy having 3 pools to yourself as well as a whole beach to yourself this is the perfect vacation getaway. We loved every second. We especially loved the marshy tack store and the fresh sea food market. The Tavern is very nice as well."

  • Low Country Gem

"This was our first stay in the Beaufort area and we could not have picked a better location or rental. It is soothing to wake up every morning to the beautiful view of water right out your back door and the sun rising over the dunes. Having stayed at many VRBO rentals over the past years, this property is truly special. The Beach house first of all is welcoming, spotless, and the floor plan and flow is great for families. It is the details and thoughtfulness (e.g. all remotes labeled, warm snuggle throw on a chair) that brings a smile to your face. In short, it is the best equipped rental we have ever stayed in. Covered parking, screened in porch, and comfortable furniture and beds is what you get. The extras are all the stuff you don't have to pack like towels, sheets, beach carts, chairs, seasonings galore, and even your dog bowls. It is perfect for kicking back, relaxing and enjoying the sound of the ocean and breeze. Tennis, a great pool, a safe place to ride a bike or pull a wagon, and even the communities own rookery all within walking distance. When you want to explore, your free Hunting Island pass is right there, and great food is near by. Breakwater, Bull Tavern, Beaufort Bread Company especially good. Beaufort waterfront park is great in the evening as well. Fran and Dennis not only love and care for their second home but also care about your stay there as well, and that is rare. We thank you for sharing your beautiful soul renewing space."

  • Great Relaxing Get Away for two!

"Very relaxing quite get away for my husband and I. We walked the private beach twice a day and one of the mornings we say horseshoe crabs mating and dolphin feeding close to shore! We went on the historic Beaufort tour on a horse carriage ride which was very informative and great for getting pictures. Lots of great restaurants to grab a bite on the waterfront with out door seating. We also did a day trip to Savanah, GA and went on the Trolley Historic tour. I would recommend going in the morning so that you can get off at the river front and have lunch and shop for a while. It is 1 1/2 hour drive each way. The condo had everything that we needed to make our stay comfortable. I would make sure to bring your beach towels and a small cooler. Hunting Island State Park has a nice beach and lots of trails to hike. We took a picnic lunch."

  • Beautiful home!

"We had the pleasure of staying at this beautiful house for a family weekend getaway. The house is much bigger than the pictures. Everyone had plenty of space and was very comfortable. The master bedroom is lovely with an incredible view. It is obvious that the owners have given a lot of love and consideration into the decoration of the house. Each room was very special and much attention had been made to the smallest details. The kitchen had everything we needed to cook a gourmet meal. The water pressure was great (important for those of us who like a nice shower). The views were just beautiful. We had a great time riding around in the golf cart. The beach is wonderful! We found some fantastic shells and went for nice long walks. We will be staying here again."

Harbor Island Travel Tips

Harbor Island is located 15 miles outside the city of Beaufort, South Carolina. This 1,400-acre barrier island offers visitors an escape from busy lives and a private island where they'll find peace and quiet. The island is famous for oat-covered sand dunes and coastal grasses.

Harbor Island Attractions

The resort itself has three outdoor pools, tennis courts, a putting green and three miles of sandy white beach that will give you the privacy you've been looking for in a vacation. When you spend a day out in the sand and sun, the kids will enjoy building sandcastles and splashing in the water while you catch some rays and enjoy a good book.

There's plenty of wildlife you're likely to encounter during your stay in Harbor Island. Whether you want to go for a walk along the marshes to check out the pelicans, egrets or herons, or watch the dolphins play as you relax among the sand dunes, you'll be amazed at the creatures you'll see roaming the land.

Hunting Island State Park is located near Harbor Island and an isolated spot to enjoy peace and quiet. This 5,000-acre barrier island was previously used as a hunting ground, but has since been converted into a state park. There's plenty of wildlife to be seen as well as four miles of beach, a maritime forest and a saltwater marsh. The quiet retreat is also home to a 19th century lighthouse and is the island's most popular attraction. You can climb to the top and get beautiful views of the coastline.

Things to Do in Harbor Island

Seafood: The catch of the day is the perfect dish while staying in Harbor Island. Be sure to check out some of the best restaurants in the South Carolina lowcountry including Johnson Creek Restaurant and Tavern, Bella Luna Cafe, LLC, Foolish Frog, Magnolia Bakery Cafe, MoonDoggies Cafe And Grill, Panini's Cafe and Saltus River Grill. You may even want to consider buying some fresh seafood and take it back to your Harbor Island vacation rental to make your own feast.

Outdoor recreation: Playing on the beach is the top outdoor activity for visitors to the island. Kids can learn a new trick on the boogie board, or you can try it out yourself. Rent a kayak and paddle your way out into the water and gasp at the breathtaking views of the seemingly endless ocean or the community along the shore.

St. Helena Island: Just across the bridge from Harbor Island is St. Helena Island. The island is home to Penn Center, one of the first schools that was opened to children of freed slaves. It's also the site of where Martin Luther King, Jr., drafted his "I Have a Dream" speech. There are several shrimp docks on St. Helena Island and much of the agriculture is still cultivated by native residents that descended from the island's original inhabitants. Head to downtown Frogmore where you can shop, dine and visit local art galleries.
