  • Great vacation!

"We had such a great time on our vacation! There were tons of things to do for the kids (ages 1 to 9). The house was beautiful and perfect for our family of seven (four adults and three kids). We loved being so close to the beach and pools and everyone in the neighborhood was friendly and relaxed. The golf cart rides were an added bonus. And our dog especially enjoyed the beach at low tide. One tip - bring STRONG bug spray if you go in late August!"

  • wonderful anniversary getaway

"This was our first visit to Harbor Island - what an introduction. We had the best time and cannot wait to return. This condo is well appointed and beautifully decorated. The views of the inlet from the master bedroom and balcony are amazing. Harbor Island is a hidden gem - the birds, fish, and reptiles on the island really are amazing. You can find something new every day. One nice feature is the owner's guidebook that explains everything about the condo and local area. It tells you about the condo, check in and check out hints, where to eat, possible things to do in the area and many other helpful ideas. The kitchen is very well stocked with cookware, appliances, condiments, and a full sized washer/dryer combo. The bathrooms are spotless. The bedrooms were relaxing and comfortable. You can tell the owners really care about their guests - it is like you are family. They even invite a call if you head up the road to Charleston for a day trip. They made everything easy - from reservation to checkout. The people we ran into on the island were friendly and engaging. One gentleman gave a tour of his garden and a couple of families invited us over to see the baby alligators in one of the marsh areas closest to the condo. We had carry out meals from the foolish frog and boondocks and recommend both. The wireless internet was fast and reliable. We are looking forward to staying here again."

Harbor Island Travel Tips

Harbor Island is located 15 miles outside the city of Beaufort, South Carolina. This 1,400-acre barrier island offers visitors an escape from busy lives and a private island where they'll find peace and quiet. The island is famous for oat-covered sand dunes and coastal grasses.

Harbor Island Attractions

The resort itself has three outdoor pools, tennis courts, a putting green and three miles of sandy white beach that will give you the privacy you've been looking for in a vacation. When you spend a day out in the sand and sun, the kids will enjoy building sandcastles and splashing in the water while you catch some rays and enjoy a good book.

There's plenty of wildlife you're likely to encounter during your stay in Harbor Island. Whether you want to go for a walk along the marshes to check out the pelicans, egrets or herons, or watch the dolphins play as you relax among the sand dunes, you'll be amazed at the creatures you'll see roaming the land.

Hunting Island State Park is located near Harbor Island and an isolated spot to enjoy peace and quiet. This 5,000-acre barrier island was previously used as a hunting ground, but has since been converted into a state park. There's plenty of wildlife to be seen as well as four miles of beach, a maritime forest and a saltwater marsh. The quiet retreat is also home to a 19th century lighthouse and is the island's most popular attraction. You can climb to the top and get beautiful views of the coastline.

Things to Do in Harbor Island

Seafood: The catch of the day is the perfect dish while staying in Harbor Island. Be sure to check out some of the best restaurants in the South Carolina lowcountry including Johnson Creek Restaurant and Tavern, Bella Luna Cafe, LLC, Foolish Frog, Magnolia Bakery Cafe, MoonDoggies Cafe And Grill, Panini's Cafe and Saltus River Grill. You may even want to consider buying some fresh seafood and take it back to your Harbor Island vacation rental to make your own feast.

Outdoor recreation: Playing on the beach is the top outdoor activity for visitors to the island. Kids can learn a new trick on the boogie board, or you can try it out yourself. Rent a kayak and paddle your way out into the water and gasp at the breathtaking views of the seemingly endless ocean or the community along the shore.

St. Helena Island: Just across the bridge from Harbor Island is St. Helena Island. The island is home to Penn Center, one of the first schools that was opened to children of freed slaves. It's also the site of where Martin Luther King, Jr., drafted his "I Have a Dream" speech. There are several shrimp docks on St. Helena Island and much of the agriculture is still cultivated by native residents that descended from the island's original inhabitants. Head to downtown Frogmore where you can shop, dine and visit local art galleries.
