  • Peaceful Getaway

"I was in the area for a business trip, but somehow turned into a much needed getaway. The home was very peaceful and the beachfront view was so tranquil and somehow sincere at every point of the day and night. I can't wait to bring the missus for a getaway very soon."

  • Relaxation destination!

"We enjoyed our stay at this cute and clean place. It had direct access to the ocean along the boardwalk and through a marsh setting. The owner was very accommodating for us as our reservations were made the morning of our arrival date and then we decided to stay an extra day, too. She made sure that we had no problems in checking in and then extending our stay. We had such a relaxing time on the beach. The pass to hunting island was nice to use as well. Thanks for a great place to stay!"

  • Exactly as described

"This was our second trip to Harbor Island and we opted for a larger unit this time. The unit is exactly as presented on this site. It was perfect for our needs. I did find myself driving to Lady's Island for additional supplies. We were adequately advised to bring additional items, but I did not read carefully enough into the suggestion. We purchased groceries at Publix on Lady's Island for the week and ate out only twice. For our week's stay and cooking in 3 times a day, I ended up purchasing more trash bags, laundry soap and dishwasher soap. The unit is supplied with 1 trash bag in the kitchen and 1 use for the dishwasher. The only downer was the master bath shower. I opted for the 2nd bedroom shower where there was a better shower head and more pressure. Perhaps it's the complex, but water pressure was an issue. Only 1 person can shower at a time and don't dare run the dishwasher, do laundry or flush the toilet at the same time! I can't even call it a complaint because once we figured it out, we worked around it and were fine! Being somewhat distant from civilization is exactly what we were looking for! Plenty of room on the beach and other people and families if you need interaction, or you can easily keep to yourself. We were able to see baby turtles this time, so my heart is happy. I'm trusting all the ones we saw conquered the circle of life and made it to their seaweed nursery in the ocean. <3 The views are great and the neighbors were respectful. I hope to return soon and I would definitely rent from the Peterson family again! Thank you for sharing your condo with us!"

"The condo was very clean. The view is breath taking. We have 2 young children and the condo and island was perfect. We like quiet and peaceful vacations. If you like to run around, hit water parks and put puts this is NOT the place for you. If you enjoy having 3 pools to yourself as well as a whole beach to yourself this is the perfect vacation getaway. We loved every second. We especially loved the marshy tack store and the fresh sea food market. The Tavern is very nice as well."

Harbor Island Travel Tips

Harbor Island is located 15 miles outside the city of Beaufort, South Carolina. This 1,400-acre barrier island offers visitors an escape from busy lives and a private island where they'll find peace and quiet. The island is famous for oat-covered sand dunes and coastal grasses.

Harbor Island Attractions

The resort itself has three outdoor pools, tennis courts, a putting green and three miles of sandy white beach that will give you the privacy you've been looking for in a vacation. When you spend a day out in the sand and sun, the kids will enjoy building sandcastles and splashing in the water while you catch some rays and enjoy a good book.

There's plenty of wildlife you're likely to encounter during your stay in Harbor Island. Whether you want to go for a walk along the marshes to check out the pelicans, egrets or herons, or watch the dolphins play as you relax among the sand dunes, you'll be amazed at the creatures you'll see roaming the land.

Hunting Island State Park is located near Harbor Island and an isolated spot to enjoy peace and quiet. This 5,000-acre barrier island was previously used as a hunting ground, but has since been converted into a state park. There's plenty of wildlife to be seen as well as four miles of beach, a maritime forest and a saltwater marsh. The quiet retreat is also home to a 19th century lighthouse and is the island's most popular attraction. You can climb to the top and get beautiful views of the coastline.

Things to Do in Harbor Island

Seafood: The catch of the day is the perfect dish while staying in Harbor Island. Be sure to check out some of the best restaurants in the South Carolina lowcountry including Johnson Creek Restaurant and Tavern, Bella Luna Cafe, LLC, Foolish Frog, Magnolia Bakery Cafe, MoonDoggies Cafe And Grill, Panini's Cafe and Saltus River Grill. You may even want to consider buying some fresh seafood and take it back to your Harbor Island vacation rental to make your own feast.

Outdoor recreation: Playing on the beach is the top outdoor activity for visitors to the island. Kids can learn a new trick on the boogie board, or you can try it out yourself. Rent a kayak and paddle your way out into the water and gasp at the breathtaking views of the seemingly endless ocean or the community along the shore.

St. Helena Island: Just across the bridge from Harbor Island is St. Helena Island. The island is home to Penn Center, one of the first schools that was opened to children of freed slaves. It's also the site of where Martin Luther King, Jr., drafted his "I Have a Dream" speech. There are several shrimp docks on St. Helena Island and much of the agriculture is still cultivated by native residents that descended from the island's original inhabitants. Head to downtown Frogmore where you can shop, dine and visit local art galleries.
