  • The absolute best spot for seeing the Black Hills of South Dakota

"My husband, his sister and her spouse spent a whole week here in August. Very clean, and everything was provided: more cooking utensils than you could possibly need, a microwave, washer & dryer (and detergent), large frig, coolers we used to take cold drinks along for the day - everything. All you need to bring along is your clothing and toothbrush. The whole cabin is decorated in a rustic décor, complete with elk head mounted above the fireplace. There is plenty of parking, even if you have a trailer. Behind the cabin/house is a 40-yard mowed path to the Michelson Trail, and great Rails-to-Trails project that goes 109 miles. I walked most mornings, and saw lots of deer, turkeys, and one woman saw a coyote. The scenery is beautiful! The cabin is ten minutes max to Custer State Park, 15 minutes to Crazy Horse Monument, half an hour to the Mammoth Site, and about an hour from Sturgis. We were there the week after Sturgis, and all the shops in Custer had their t-shirts reduced quite a bit. Be sure to stop in at the owners grocery store, and right across the street is my favorite, "A Walk in the Woods", with the prettiest restrooms I've ever seen. The pizza shop right down town was terrific, with lots of seating outside when the weather is nice. The only negative was no internet, but my brother-in-law brought along a device that enabled us to get on each day. Good cell phone reception for Verizon users. Having two full-sized bathrooms was wonderful, and there was plenty of sleeping space for at least 7, not including 3 couches and two recliners. The folks in the community were extremely friendly and helpful. We would definitely stay here again!"

  • Perfection!

"Great house and location. Wonderful owner. We had four couples, and it worked beautifully. The four bedrooms each have their own private bathroom. The bunk room bathroom can be used by others but can be shut off for privacy as well. A half bath on the main floor is handy. Wonderful spaces up and down for families/groups to mingle as well as a wonderful deck with table and chairs. Kitchen is great. Good sign when you don't want to leave!!!!"

  • Wish I could live here!

"What an exciting experience to be on one of the original homesteads in the Black Hills! It is so quiet there and so dark at night. Lots of animals around (deer, elk, turkeys, squirrels...). The old buildings from the gold miners are fantastic. One is hand hewn logs with mud stuck in the cracks! The house is old but well loved and homey. We did not want to leave! Not many places like this left in the world!"

  • 5 Plus Stars

"What a wonderful place! We spent a week here with another couple to celebrate my 70th birthday. The week before I had surgery, and this place was great for relaxing. The weather was nice, so we were able to grill out several nights and even have breakfast on the deck a couple of mornings. It is ideally located for visiting the major attractions in the area. I loved the remote control starting fireplace that could be seen from both the living room AND master bedroom. When the evenings got cool, I would take my Kindle into the comfortable chair in the bedroom, start the fire and read until I got sleepy. The other couple with us enjoyed the "suite" that was made up with 2 bedrooms, a bath and a sitting area in the downstairs area. It was a private area for them to adjourn to in the evening. We worried that the place was be minimally stocked, but that was not the case! Everything we needed was there and then some. It was nice to also have the washer and dryer available. We took advantage of the hot tub to soak our tired bones after sitting in the car sightseeing. The rental staff was accommodating and friendly. There is NOTHING I would change about the place! It was magnificent!"
