  • Everything we hoped for and more

"From the moment we walked in the door, it was apparent that we had chosen wisely in selecting the Black Hills Sanctuary - Couple's Cabin. It immediately met all of our expectations. Warm, cozy, comfortable and welcoming -- it looks like a place you could enjoy for a week or more. We are halfway through our first week in the Black Hills, and coming back here each day after visiting sites in the area is truly enjoyable. It feels like home. The kitchen is spacious and provides ample room for food prep and eating at the counter. The bedroom [and bed] are quite comfortable, and each night has been very relaxing. For those who don't want to totally unplug, the cabin has wifi and cable tv. The cabin is quite close to all of the things a first time visitor would want [Custer State Park, Mt Rushmore, an abundance of hiking, and good food]. I couldn't recommend this place more . . . and we will certainly return."

  • The absolute best spot for seeing the Black Hills of South Dakota

"My husband, his sister and her spouse spent a whole week here in August. Very clean, and everything was provided: more cooking utensils than you could possibly need, a microwave, washer & dryer (and detergent), large frig, coolers we used to take cold drinks along for the day - everything. All you need to bring along is your clothing and toothbrush. The whole cabin is decorated in a rustic décor, complete with elk head mounted above the fireplace. There is plenty of parking, even if you have a trailer. Behind the cabin/house is a 40-yard mowed path to the Michelson Trail, and great Rails-to-Trails project that goes 109 miles. I walked most mornings, and saw lots of deer, turkeys, and one woman saw a coyote. The scenery is beautiful! The cabin is ten minutes max to Custer State Park, 15 minutes to Crazy Horse Monument, half an hour to the Mammoth Site, and about an hour from Sturgis. We were there the week after Sturgis, and all the shops in Custer had their t-shirts reduced quite a bit. Be sure to stop in at the owners grocery store, and right across the street is my favorite, "A Walk in the Woods", with the prettiest restrooms I've ever seen. The pizza shop right down town was terrific, with lots of seating outside when the weather is nice. The only negative was no internet, but my brother-in-law brought along a device that enabled us to get on each day. Good cell phone reception for Verizon users. Having two full-sized bathrooms was wonderful, and there was plenty of sleeping space for at least 7, not including 3 couches and two recliners. The folks in the community were extremely friendly and helpful. We would definitely stay here again!"

  • Exceptional

"This was perfect for our family reunion. It is beautiful and it was clean. There wasn't Internet available. Couldn't get one of DVD players to work, but there were several so that didn't matter. Those were the only negatives we were able to find--it was exceptional for our needs. We were fortunate to book here as we were late reserving. The pictures don't show it off well enough. I would keep going, but if I rave too much, I may not get to reserve it again!"

  • Perfection!

"Great house and location. Wonderful owner. We had four couples, and it worked beautifully. The four bedrooms each have their own private bathroom. The bunk room bathroom can be used by others but can be shut off for privacy as well. A half bath on the main floor is handy. Wonderful spaces up and down for families/groups to mingle as well as a wonderful deck with table and chairs. Kitchen is great. Good sign when you don't want to leave!!!!"

Black Hills Travel Tips

Lose Your Heart to the Black Hills of Dakota

Two words sum up the Black Hills region of South Dakota--awe inspiring! The abundance of wide open space, breathtaking views and fascinating history, combine with the many options for day trips and year-round activities, making this place a wonderful vacation location. Visitors to Black Hills cabins may find the regional airport at Rapid City a convenient option. However, the region provides excellent roads with interstates such as I-90 and many state highways.

The Black Hills area has long, hot, dry summers and winters with lots of great snow for a variety of winter sports and activities.

The Black Hills are Full of Awe-Inspiring Scenery

Whatever time of year, the Black Hills offer endless activities along with the awe-inspiring scenery. Whether it’s the hiking, biking, golf, climbing, ATV tours, or hunting, it is all here, right outside the doorsteps of Black Hills vacation rentals. During winter, come for skiing, snowboarding, snowmobiling, snowshoeing and much more.

Whenever visitors come, it is the scenery that makes the Black Hills special. From visiting Mount Rushmore, the Devils Tower, forests, Sylvan Lake and the Badlands National Park to seeing the still-in-construction Crazy Horse Monument, it is a region of breathtaking beauty. In Custer State Park, spend a morning hiking, then stop for a picnic and watch the buffalo as they roam across their land. You can also see prairie dogs at play and wild horses.

While visitors enjoy the incredible activities and scenery that surrounds them, there is another not-to-be-missed experience beneath their feet. This region is rich in caves to explore, with equally incredible sights, such as Thunderhead Underground falls where an enormous subterranean waterfall awaits the adventurous visitor.

The Black Hills Area for a Home Where the Buffalo Roam

Black Hills vacation rentals in towns here are part of American history. The main city is Rapid City which is an excellent base for trout fishing. It is also a great place to visit the Dinosaur Park where prehistoric creatures are scattered along the skyline. Dating from 1875 and surrounded by thick Ponderosa Pine forests, Custer City is the oldest city in the region. This city is perfect as a starting point for mountain bikers and hikers to access the trails in Custer State Park. The famous city of Deadwood is also a national historic landmark, with its historic buildings, saloons and museums. Here, the western tradition of shoot-outs still remains, although now it is just for show. While here, visit the graves of the Wild West heroes such as Wild Bill and Calamity Jane at Mount Moriah Cemetery and pan for gold at one of the local mines.

Homes Where the Kids can be Cowboys
