"We very much enjoyed our stay here. The inside of the house is well decorated, and the kitchen is large and well-stocked for cooking a nice meal. The tub, extra large shower, and outdoor shower were welcome additions after we returned from hiking the South Rim Trail in Big Bend. The huge back patio provided an excellent vantage point for the spectacular sunsets and the the dark, star-filled nights."

"We just got home from our first trip to the Texas Big Bend area. We originally planned on spending 4 nights in Marfa but could only find accommodations for 2 nights there - so I booked our first 2 nights in Marathon at La Esmeralda. Now I wish we'd never left La Esmeralda. Wow! While the photos on VRBO accurately reflect what you'll find in the house - they still don't do it justice. The house is a knockout - decorated in the most perfectly rustic, Texas style imaginable. Antique bureaus, uniquely quirky lighting and art, beautiful vintage Mexican pottery and what must be the world's most comfortable porch glider. Plus everything to make your stay comfortable - cable TV, a large selection of DVDs, CDs, books and magazines, fluffy towels in the bath, everything you need to prepare and serve meals. You can just feel that this house is loved. If La Esmeralda was mine, I'd never leave - but I thank Carole for sharing it with us - if only for a couple of nights. We'll be back!"

"We 3 couples from Austin stayed at this old family home for several days. It is a charming house which well suited our needs while we explored the entire Big Bend, Alpine, Marfa and Fort Davis area.
The manager was extremely helpful prior to and during our stay."

"We used the house as a base to explore large parts of Big Bend. Generally speaking, the home is as advertised. Marathon is a funky little town and the house fits right in. It's exceptionally quiet and remote with the occasional train in the distance.
The house is in good working shape and was clean and everything worked. It could use a bit of a deep cleaning: there's a lot of built-up dust and the shower curtain is in dire need of replacing. The beds, linens and towels are above average."
