"I had the privilege of staying at the McGonagill House for an extended vacation in JAN/FEB 2015. The home is beautiful, large, spacious, quiet, and relaxing. There is a large grass yard with many mature shade trees. The train passes through town a couple times a day (which is really fun to see), and the sound is significantly muffled by the walls of this gorgeous stone home. The home has two covered porches, one that stays shady during the day, and one that allows the sun to come through so that it warms the porch and bathes it in light, yet it is a covered porch that allows for shade so that you can stay on the porch all day and read and daydream, get warmed up, but still have shade to retreat to. There is ample parking for large vehicles in the driveway of the home. The rooms in the home are quite large and not cluttered, allowing you lots of room for your luggage. The bedrooms have roomy closets for hanging clothes, and the bedrooms also have empty dressers for you to stash your folded clothes. The bathrooms are well-stocked with thick bath towels, hand towels, washcloths, everything you'd need. The laundry room has a full-sized modern washer and dryer. The kitchen is fully stocked with plates, utensils, glasses, mugs, plastic ware for the kids, coffee machine, toaster, microwave, oven, range, refrigerator/freezer and dishwasher. The rooms have large windows practically floor to ceiling that allow light in and beautiful outdoor views from every room of the house. The home is situated picturesquely on the East side of town, with fabulous views of the sunrise. Marathon sunsets as seen from the McGonagill House are breathtaking, as are the velvet-black night skies. You can not believe the number of stars you will see in the nighttime Marathon sky. Everything in the town of Marathon is within walking distance, to include the Gage Hotel Restaurant/Bar, the Post Office, the Bank, the local grocery/sundries store, local art galleries, locally owned gift-shops, and the 26-acre Botanical Gardens of the Gage Hotel. Marathon is the perfect jumping off place for traveling to the Big Bend National Park and the Big Bend Ranch State Park. This family-owned and managed McGonagill House is the perfect spot for thorough relaxation and enjoyment. The manager responds immediately to VBRO e-mails/inquiries which makes it easy to communicate and have your questions answered right away. Staying at the McGonagill House is an absolute pleasure!"
