"My husband and I stayed at Tarantula Ranch for 4 nights in May 2015, as part of a week-long West Texas adventure to celebrate our anniversary. This was our first time planning an escape to the middle of the solitary desert, and we found solace in having an “expert” just a walkie-talkie call away! We spent our mornings taking in the amazingly beautiful views from the porch, with greetings from our new burro and horse friends (icing on the cake to our ranch experience). We would then head off to Big Bend National Park for the day, returning most nights just in time to catch the sunset. We enjoyed talking with Curt and learning of his life of adventure in Terlingua. One night, he was so kind and made us margaritas to indulge in as we watched the lightening storm from far away on his deck (this was in addition to the pitcher of margaritas and seasoned popcorn we were greeted with upon our arrival- a truly welcoming touch). By the way, that lightening storm never reached us, and we recommend taking an evening soak in the hot tub, where we found ourselves staring into a whole new world of beautiful clear sky!
A couple tips: 1) There is a full grocery store available in Alpine that we stopped at for a few last minute refrigerated foods that we planned to have for our vacation. However if you do forget anything on your drive in, have no fear- there is a “Country store" located about a 10 mile drive from Tarantula Ranch; just be sure to plan your visit there around its hours of operation. 2) Another tip: we enjoyed remaining unplugged for the majority of our stay but did desire the ability to have Wi-Fi available to check in with family and send out an occasional e-mail. We found that we got the best phone signal right outside of Curt’s home for this.
If you are looking for a vacation with a ton of character and have a bit of an adventurous side to you, this is the place for you!"

"We loved the house and the beautiful views. We loved how close it was to Big Bend National Park. There was 7 of us in the house and we had plenty of space. The only downside was that the hot water in the shower stopped working on the 2nd day in the bedroom across from the kitchen, but we used the other bathroom shower and it had plenty of hot water. We will definately try to come back to Terlingua again and we would stay at Terlingua house."

"Our group of 10 motorcyclists had a great time in Big Bend and our stay at Laughing Horse Retreat (LHR).
The bathrooms, kitchen and laundry room were very well stocked.
Before the trip I was a little worried that the A/C might not keep up during the hot weather. Since the main house had a cover and what looked like a fairly new central A/C system, and the cabin had a window unit at both ends, everyone stayed nice and cool. One evening the power service went off and did not come back on until 4 AM, during which it was quite warm, but this was a general area power outage and not the fault of LHR.
The view from the back deck (shaded in the evening) is spectacular - the place is surrounded by mountains. Another plus is that we had complete privacy.
Obviously the bike riding in the Big Bend area is second to none. If we lived closer, we would probably go there twice a year."

"Rancho Mula Oso is a prime spot for enjoying Terlingua and the Big Bend. The property is less than 7 miles from Terlingua, and 0.2 of a mile from Highway 118. The property is air conditioned, includes a fire pit with firewood, grill, sunken tub, and great views of the mountains. The owner is a second generation native of the area, and has provided everything a family needs to enjoy the Big Bend in comfort. He also has an amazing rock collection on display in the property, as well as local art from area artisans (including himself). The pictures do not do this property justice."
