  • Spring Break 2014

"Villa Terlingua was the ideal home base for our Big Bend adventures. With growing preteen/teenage children, our family needs room to spread out. The indoor spaces of this home are cozy and the outdoor spaces are breathtaking. The house is rustic, eclectic, and obviously built with love. Rustic does not mean roughing it, however. Hot water on demand in the middle of a ghost town! Who knew? Don't forget to look for the fossils in the shower. And for those who feel the need to stay connected to the outside world, there is internet access. The kitchen is well equipped, but you will want to stock up on groceries in Fort Stockton or Alpine before you make the trek to Terlingua. The local market is fine in an emergency, but expensive and limited. The real treasure of Villa Terlingua is the owner. What an amazing individual. She is a river and back country guide, a scholar, a protector of the environment, an activist, a volunteer, a respected community member. Her knowledge of and love for the area was indispensable as we planned our daily activities. Thanks to her guidance and connections, my husband and I felt very comfortable taking our children across the recently opened border to Boquillas del Carmen for the afternoon. We can't wait for Spring Break 2015 at Villa Terlingua."

  • Awesome Place!!

"My daughter is getting married next year and it was our last big daddy/daughter trip just the two of us. We could not have stayed at a better place in the Big Bend area. Although it was just the two of us and we didn't need as much space as Terlingua House provided....we especially enjoyed all the outdoor areas there including the deck on top of the house. The house was clean and very well-stocked with everything we needed. It was a convenient drive from the house to Far Flung Adventures and Big Bend River Tours. I would highly recommend this place to anyone visiting Big Bend. It would be especially great for two or three couples or large families since it provides the privacy of totally separate buildings for each bedroom. Thank you for a very enjoyable 5-night stay!!"

  • Out of the ordinary!

"Our first trip to Big Bend. Having read some horror stories of VRBO rentals gone very very wrong I was a little nervous about renting from VRBO. DO NOT FEAR, this VRBO rental is the real deal. Curtis is honest and provides exactly what his listing says it does. Husband, self and two college age sons stayed in the cabin for 3 nights. I brought something to put in the oven the first night anticipating being tired from a 500 mile drive and we had a totally relaxing evening watching the sun set, marveling at the wide open view and enjoying Curt's delicious margaritas and popcorn. Never used the TV, didn't have cell signal and didn't try the wifi...unplugged was the way to go. When was the last time you played cards with your kids? It was amazing. Star gazing after dark was well worth staying up late. Cabin has everything you need, towels, linens, coffee pot, pots & pans. We took some breakfast stuff and eat well before heading out each day. Our small, not 4 wheel drive car made it up the dirt road just fine and managed to get us into Terlingua and Big Bend Park without problems. Curtis took us on a tour of some his property one morning - a highlight of the trip. He is knowledgeable and entertaining, I feel like we had an insiders tour of the area. Being animal lovers we were quite happy to have his collection of horses, burros and dogs around. The horses and burros especially enjoyed a 'breakfast apple' each morning. (I recommend taking a few extras for them, they were most appreciative!) The entire trip was rejuvenating and unlike any vacation we've ever had. The wide open spaces, tranquility and the stunning quiet are not to be believed. Won't stay anywhere else in the Big Bend, Tarantula Ranch only for us. I agree with the other reviewer who considered leaving a bad review in order to scare people off making it easier for me to get a reservation, but in the end I couldn't deprive people of the opportunity to experience what we did. Thanks Curt, we'll be back."

Terlingua Travel Tips

Find Terlingua Vacation Rentals in This Ghost Town

Terlingua was once a Texas ghost town in the desert near the Rio Grande. Today, the abandoned mines and buildings attract numerous tourists, and Terlingua is a charming community that makes a great vacation destination. Terlingua vacation houses allow you to stay in comfort, without fighting for lodging with the other tourists in the area, and you have easy access to all the great things to see and do in the Terlingua area.

Minutes from Big Bend National Park

Big Bend Country lodging means you're close to all of the wonderful outdoor activities that Big Bend National Park is famous for. Try rafting on the Rio Grande, riding your motorcycle on the roadways in the area, hiking, or riding your mountain bike on the trails to burn some energy and get your adrenaline flowing during your vacation. Walk right out the door of Terlingua vacation rentals—exciting adventures at Big Bend await.

Ride for Mas o Menos

Book Terlingua vacation Houses for Presidents Day weekend, when experienced cyclists from across the country come to Terlingua to race in the annual Mas o Menos 100 mountain bike race, sponsored by Desert Sports. This four-day event is open to bike riders of all skill levels because of the multiple events they offer. Mas o Menos 100 culminates with a 100 kilometer mountain bike race through the rough terrain surrounding Terlingua.

It's Chili Times Two in Terlingua

If chili is your specialty, Big Bend Country lodging can put you in the prime location to sign up for not one, but two chili cook offs in Terlingua. On the first Saturday of November, Terlingua hosts the Chili Appreciation Society International and the Frank X. Tolbert/Wick Fowler World Chili Championships. Use the kitchen in your vacation house, and then put your chili up against the rest if you're brave enough.
