  • We loved the being on the bay!

"Last year we stayed in two separate condos on the beach side of the island for our big family vacation, which was great. For this year, we wanted a place big enough to all stay together. We were also interested in trying out the bay side instead of the beach side. This townhome was perfect for us. We had a total of 17 people for most of the time, and up to 19 for 3 nights. We had 2 three year olds, 3 seven/eight year olds, 3 thirteen year olds, a 16 year old, and the rest adults. The loft was perfect for the tweeners. We all loved the game room. We loved being on the bay side and being able to fish right from the dock. The kids caught lots of fish, a couple of sea urchins, and a crab. They loved watching the sea slugs swim by. They netted a few and were fascinated when they "inked" going back into the water. The adult guys still went out on charters for "real" fishing, but they had a blast fishing from the dock in between those trips. We saw a sting ray swim by one evening while we were out on the second story balcony. We also sat out in the evenings and waved at all the party boats and dolphin watch cruises as they went by. Another huge plus were the 4 kayaks. We wanted to rent kayaks last year, but decided it was too expensive. It was awesome to have 4 right there at our disposal, and if you figure the cost of renting kayaks it makes the cost of renting this townhome even more reasonable. We all loved the kayaking (even me, a 56 year old grandmother!), but the 13 year olds would hardly get off of them! The living areas, kitchen, and baths were all wonderful (everything is IKEA - and we are big fans!) - well stocked, ready to use, and very nice. As far as the difference between the beach and the bay sides, we had the advantage that my Dad lives in a 2 bedroom condo on the beach side, so we were able to go to the beach and use the pool there. We also went to Clayton's which has great beach access. The listing description was accurate regarding the location (we walked to Liam's). The photos accurately reflected the rental's appearance and amenities. The property was clean and well-maintained. The owner was helpful in answering your questions or concerns - over and above. Klaus was exceptionally helpful. My oldest son left a toolbox in the garage and didn't realize it till we got home (9 hours away), and Klaus has been most helpful in getting it back to him. I highly recommend this property to friends, relatives, or anyone else! We plan to stay there again."

  • Great start to Summer!

"This unit was fabulous! The pictures looked amazing and they did not do it justice. These are truly million dollar views! The Sapphire staff was attentive and helpful. The pool and workout facilities were great. This unit is awesome. It is stylishly decorated with top of the line furnishings, but it feels relaxed like the beach should. Our 6 and 3 year old children loved it and called it paradise! We could not agree more. This is truly a great place for a weekend escape to paradise! We will definitely return."

  • Awesome stay!

"Great place to relax! Laid back atmosphere, family friendly. Loved the keypad entry lock to the condo, didn't have to keep up with a key. Beach wasn't crowded at all confront of condo. Will return, hopefully soon!"

  • Great place to stay!

"This place was perfect for our family (four adults and two kids). The unit is spacious, immaculate, and well stocked. This house is in a great location - just a few steps away from the beach access, shopping, and close to several really good restaurants. The owners are very friendly, informative, and accommodating. We thoroughly enjoyed our stay and would definitely stay there again."

South Padre Island Travel Tips

South Padre Island is located on a long strip of island at the very southern tip of Texas and has beautiful natural landscapes, year-round attractions and events that visitors from spring breakers to families will enjoy.

Nature Attractions

South Padre Island boasts several opportunities to immerse yourself in natural beauty and learn about the delicate coastal ecosystem:

Sea Turtle Inc. is located at the end of Padre Boulevard near the convention center. It is a conservation center committed to protecting all sea turtle species. Kids can learn how to identify each type of sea turtle, take part in crafts and learn about conservation efforts. If you’re here in the spring, this is a must-visit for watching as sea turtles hatch and are released into the wild.

The Dolphin Research and Sea Life Nature Center, located across the bridge on Port Isabel, is another great spot for kids and adults to learn about Gulf Coast sea life. You can get up close and personal with hermit crabs and starfish, or take a boat tour to see some dolphins. While you’re nearby, check out the Port Isabel Lighthouse.

Take a walk on the Laguna Madre Nature Trail, a stunning, 1,500 foot marshland boardwalk, to see coastal birds and get some exercise and head to the nearby Birding and Nature Center as well.

Beach Activities and Watersports

South Padre island is abundant in outdoor sports and activities. Here are some of the best:

- Take a sandcastle building lesson from Boomerang Billy’s on the beach.

- Visit Schiltterbahn Beach Waterpark on the southern end of the island. This sandcastle themed waterpark is a kid’s paradise.

- Visit the 40-acre Adventure Park at the end of Park Road on Laguna Madre Bay to rent ATVs to cruise along the beach.

- Ride horses along the scenic beach with the Island Equestrian Center - both amateurs and experienced riders are welcome.

- Take a boat cruise. Head out on The Original Dolphin Watch, take a cruise with Isla Tours, or take a sunset, snorkeling or dinner cruise with Southern Wave Sailing Charters. You can also rent paddleboats and kayaks from this watersports shop, located on the west side of the island off of Laguna Madre Bay, between the popular Tequila Sunset and Louie’s Backyard bar and grills.

Dining Options

South Padre Island has plenty ofcasual beach fare and local seafood options.

- For beachside casual fare, head to brightly decorated Pier 19 Restaurant, grab fried shrimp at Dirty Al’s on the Marina, check out Coconuts Bar & Grill off of Laguna Boulevard or hang out at Wanna-Wanna Beach Bar & Grill on the east side of the island.

- Grab a local brew and excellent burger at Padre Island Brewing Company

- The best spot for upscale dining in South Padre Island is the Sea Ranch Restaurant, which offers fresh seafood dishes and pretty harbor views.

Events

In the first weekend of October each year, South Padre Island celebrates the annual Sand Castle Days, a 3-day event where you can watch master sand sculptors from around the world compete to turn sand into stunning works of art. There’s an amateur contest and arts and crafts for kids. Clayton’s Beach Bar and Grill hosts the event.

If you visit in December, don’t miss the Christmas Lighted Boat Parade. Locals dress their boats with Christmas lights and parade from Pirates Landing in Port Isabel to Jim’s Pier on South Padre Island. You’ll see everything from yachts to kayaks in this annual competition and winter celebration.
