  • Senior member of family

"While searching for a rental home that would accommodate at least 14 of our family, we discovered the Red Parrot. Not only were the kitchens, bedrooms and bathrooms perfect for our group, the owner, Fred H., was a pleasure to deal with in every aspect of our stay. The price was right, and the insides were clean. When we needed help, Fred was quick to assist with his maintenance man. We would definitely return to the Red Parrot."

  • Relaxing with friends

"We thoroughly enjoyed our beach vacation at the Sandbox Beach House! The house was spotlessly clean when we arrived and was the perfect size for two couples seeking to"get away from it all"! We enjoyed the close proximity to both beach and bay, the nice sized BBQ grill, the deck in the early mornings and evenings, and our daily conversations with the wonderful and Helpful Pat! Thanks for a much needed restful and relaxing vacation!"

  • Wonderful time in South Padre

"My family and I needed to get away (husband/ wife/ toddler/ in-laws). After deciding on going to South Padre, we sought out our specific needs for a vacation rental and we found this condo. The bad news, as our vacation approached, it was 50-80% showers daily. First off, the complex's facilities are secure, safe, and clean. Not only is there a coded gate, but there is security in the evening and cameras. The complex is well maintained, and the landscaping is kept up. There were not a lot of people in the complex while we were there but as it got busier towards the weekend, we still didn't notice any noise. This includes Schlitterbaun being open all day Saturday. The condo is very nice and kept up. It has all the stated amenities, and obviously someone's own and not just a full time rental. The beach is only 60 yards away, and it is also well maintained and clean. We saw crews hit the beach every morning. This is the last complex on the beach so skies the limit on space. No public access around or too many people from the Schlitterbaun resort. We never worried once about setting up our base and leaving. The beach was very fun but also peaceful. It's beautiful in South Padre. No pollution and aqua blue waters. No big waves to keep you out of the water. We hit up the other end of the island with our toddler for a Petting zoo. We went down to the Brownsville zoo as well (truly a great place and much bigger than you would ever expect). HEB and Walmart are less than 10 away in Port Isabel for forgotten essentials. Dirty Al's offers some great local fair. Overall, if we could do anything different, it would have been to eat out less. We will plan to stay in this Condo again on our next adventure to South Padre. Be sure to bring mosquito repellant, there were too many for my liking which made the short walk to the beach a tough one. That is obviously out of the hands of everyone. On other positive notes... The owners were accessible the entire time for questions and obviously wanted us to enjoy our stay. Oh... And that rain, we had a sprinkle for less than 10 min on a single day."

South Padre Island Travel Tips

South Padre Island is located on a long strip of island at the very southern tip of Texas and has beautiful natural landscapes, year-round attractions and events that visitors from spring breakers to families will enjoy.

Nature Attractions

South Padre Island boasts several opportunities to immerse yourself in natural beauty and learn about the delicate coastal ecosystem:

Sea Turtle Inc. is located at the end of Padre Boulevard near the convention center. It is a conservation center committed to protecting all sea turtle species. Kids can learn how to identify each type of sea turtle, take part in crafts and learn about conservation efforts. If you’re here in the spring, this is a must-visit for watching as sea turtles hatch and are released into the wild.

The Dolphin Research and Sea Life Nature Center, located across the bridge on Port Isabel, is another great spot for kids and adults to learn about Gulf Coast sea life. You can get up close and personal with hermit crabs and starfish, or take a boat tour to see some dolphins. While you’re nearby, check out the Port Isabel Lighthouse.

Take a walk on the Laguna Madre Nature Trail, a stunning, 1,500 foot marshland boardwalk, to see coastal birds and get some exercise and head to the nearby Birding and Nature Center as well.

Beach Activities and Watersports

South Padre island is abundant in outdoor sports and activities. Here are some of the best:

- Take a sandcastle building lesson from Boomerang Billy’s on the beach.

- Visit Schiltterbahn Beach Waterpark on the southern end of the island. This sandcastle themed waterpark is a kid’s paradise.

- Visit the 40-acre Adventure Park at the end of Park Road on Laguna Madre Bay to rent ATVs to cruise along the beach.

- Ride horses along the scenic beach with the Island Equestrian Center - both amateurs and experienced riders are welcome.

- Take a boat cruise. Head out on The Original Dolphin Watch, take a cruise with Isla Tours, or take a sunset, snorkeling or dinner cruise with Southern Wave Sailing Charters. You can also rent paddleboats and kayaks from this watersports shop, located on the west side of the island off of Laguna Madre Bay, between the popular Tequila Sunset and Louie’s Backyard bar and grills.

Dining Options

South Padre Island has plenty ofcasual beach fare and local seafood options.

- For beachside casual fare, head to brightly decorated Pier 19 Restaurant, grab fried shrimp at Dirty Al’s on the Marina, check out Coconuts Bar & Grill off of Laguna Boulevard or hang out at Wanna-Wanna Beach Bar & Grill on the east side of the island.

- Grab a local brew and excellent burger at Padre Island Brewing Company

- The best spot for upscale dining in South Padre Island is the Sea Ranch Restaurant, which offers fresh seafood dishes and pretty harbor views.

Events

In the first weekend of October each year, South Padre Island celebrates the annual Sand Castle Days, a 3-day event where you can watch master sand sculptors from around the world compete to turn sand into stunning works of art. There’s an amateur contest and arts and crafts for kids. Clayton’s Beach Bar and Grill hosts the event.

If you visit in December, don’t miss the Christmas Lighted Boat Parade. Locals dress their boats with Christmas lights and parade from Pirates Landing in Port Isabel to Jim’s Pier on South Padre Island. You’ll see everything from yachts to kayaks in this annual competition and winter celebration.
