  • A Comfy Private Retreat in the Blue Ridge Mountains

"Our stay at River Oak Retreat was quite enjoyable. The cottage sits high on a hill in the valley outside of Galax. It is a quick 5 mile drive to the town. Once you arrive at the cabin, it is secluded and peaceful. The sound of crickets and peepers was both loud and relaxing. The deck’s view looks across treetops into the valley. If you are looking for a cabin with privacy and the chance to experience the solitude of nature, this is the place. We used the cottage as our base for two days of cycling the New River Trail which has a trailhead on the road into town (the start of the trail is in downtown Galax). It was very convenient. We spent another day touring the Blue Ridge Parkway which was less than a 30 minute drive from the cabin. We also visited Galax’s local farmers market, downtown and the town’s new microbrewery. I highly recommend a visit to the microbrewery; nice people and good craft beer. The cabin itself is very nicely decorated. I believe they just recently refurnished it. It is spacious and comfortable. The kitchen is fully equipped. This place was CLEAN. It was exactly what we were looking for in a vacation home. We would definitely visit the cabin in the future. You might find cabins with a similar price along the trail. What they cannot offer that this cabin offers is privacy and being able to experience the mountains without someone 100 feet away."

  • Thank you for the hospitality!!

"Dianne was great to work with, allowing my retired husband and I to rent the "Little Sister" -- the full basement apartment of this property for two nights while I was working in Independence and Marion -- it is perfectly located between the two locations. The apartment was clean and comfortable and nicer than the pictures showed. The cabin was close enough to Grayson Highland Park that my husband spent a day there hiking!"

  • Relaxing vacation!

"My boyfriend, myself and our dog stayed at River Misty Retreat for a week in August. First let me say Shannon the owner was a pleasure talking too. I would highly recommend this house for a very relaxing, fun get away. We loved our mornings on the porch reading and enjoying the river. We fished, (didn't have any luck) but we still tried. Especially loved the huge hammocks. Our dog loved here daily walks on the property and swimming in the river. We saw lots of deer on the other side of the river every evening and had a campfire at night. We did venture out and go to an alpaca farm and a few wineries. There is a winery close by in Galax (Mt. Vale Vineyards) which was very nice and the owners very friendly. It was was just the 3 of us but this lovely home is big enough for the whole gang and has lots of different games. Can't go wrong renting this property."

  • Tranquility is a good description for this home

"We rented this home with 2 couples who were there for the purpose of riding motorcycles on the wonderful Virginia/North Carolina roads. We stayed for 5 nights and did 4 day rides out from here. We had 7 couples in total and 5 couples stayed in their sister home, Coldridge Manor, 2.4 miles away. The home met our needs very well and the owner was very kind to us and even drove us in to town to pick up pizza. He also built us a bonfire. Two helpful hints: There are 2 bathrooms, 1 of them is accessible only by going outside and down some stairs and using a sliding door to enter basement level, and if you are traveling by motorcycle you should know that there is about ¼ mile of gravel road to travel right before you get to the house, then down a small gravel driveway to park, we traveled it several times without incident. Great home! We had a lot of fun."
