  • Perfect beautiful setting!!!

"I was so thrilled to find this beautiful mountain home. I talked to the owner, Susan many times and she was so helpful. There were 13 of us siblings that stayed there very comfortably. 4 couples and 5 of us that did not bring our husbands. We were in town for a wedding, but wanted a place to stay after the wedding. It was the perfect place. We went in different directions all day, and then came together at night to talk about our adventures around Virginia. The bedroom off the kitchen was the perfect spot for my 87 year old Mom. It was on the main floor and the bathroom was connected. We all found the room that worked the best for us. I took the loft with my 2 sisters because I get up early, and did not need the privacy. The bedrooms are all decorated so beautifully with homemade quilts on each bed. My brother and his wife choose the "Goldilocks" room because they did not want to share a room and the three beds and little door gave them the privacy they wanted. He and his wife loved it!!! We shopped for groceries at the Krogers in town on our way to cabin. The refrigerator worked well as well as the freezer. What a nice touch to have a dishwasher. The cabin was well stocked with sheets, towels, washcloths, kitchen towels, toilet paper, paper towels, garbage bags, and spices. We thought we would run out of TP, and paper towels so we purchased more. We did not need them, so we left them behind. Also, there was a dispenser of bottled water in the kitchen with many spare bottles outside. This was not advertised, but what a special treat!! Speaking of outside.....the porch with rocking chairs and swing were the perfect place to gather for morning coffee, or at night to share memories. We did not take advantage of the fire pit as it rained the nights most of us were there. I took so many beautiful pictures around the yard of the changing colors on the trees. My brother was the only one who had cell phone service, but, I did not even miss it because of the wonderful time we were all having. I had service as soon as I hit the highway. That was soon enough!! I LOVE my phone, but it was good to just put it away. I'm trying to think of a reason to come back to stay in this cabin. I was so sad when I locked the door for the final time!! Thank you for having such a wonderful get away in such a beautiful setting!!!"

  • Great lake house for all ages

"We had a family get together at this lake house and it was wonderful. All ages from 1 to 80 enjoyed the house in their own way. The kids had so much fun down by the lake, jumping off the dock, trying to catch fish, and sitting by the fire-pit. The older family members relaxed on the outdoor screened in porch and watched the fun from a quiet distance. During the whole week we stayed we barely saw anyone, it was as if we had the lake to ourselves and the water was incredibly warm. The house was remarkably clean and well cared for. It is extremely homey and comfortable with a spacious open floor plan downstairs. The owner has thought of every tiny convenience one can think of to make the vacation that less stressful. Everyone LOVED the outdoor shower as well. If you are looking for a relaxing week - i highly recommend staying here."

  • Cozy, off-the-beaten track retreat

"My girlfriend and I stayed at the Squirrel's Nest last weekend and it was a great homebase for our activities in Central VA. The pictures don't do the quality of the design and the cleanliness of the place justice. It's a great place for 2, although it might be a little claustrophobic if you have 4 or more in your party. We loved the loft bedroom and the family room area. Thanks for helping us have a great weekend!"

  • Great ski weekend getaway

"We had a group of 7 20-30somethings up from Richmond for a ski weekend, and this was the perfect house for it. The owners were quick to respond to any email inquiries we had leading up to the trip, and their directions to the house were spot on. There was more than enough room for all of us, and we could have comfortably had a couple more guests. We took advantage of the wood burning fireplace the entire weekend- there was plenty of wood stocked up outside. The kitchen was very well-equipped, as we cooked every morning and evening. The deck was nice and tranquil, and enjoying the hot tub on a cold night with a glass of wine was fabulous. If you're planning on skiing, my advice would be to avoid the shuttle since it's a steep uphill walk to the closest stop. You can drive to the spa parking lot (less than 5 minutes away) and have the shuttle pick you up. All in all this was the perfect spot for our relaxing weekend, and we will definitely be back!"

Central Virginia Travel Tips

Central Virginia, the Birthplace of America

Choosing Central Virginia condos as bases for vacations puts visitors in a region that is known as the birthplace of America. With the first permanent settlement in Jamesburg in 1607 through its role in the Revolution and Civil War, it is an area of living history. Its major cities include Richmond, Charlottesville and Lynchburg. To get here, visitors fly to Richmond International Airport. You could also travel via the excellent interstate highways leading to Central Virginia, with I-64, I-95, I-295 and I-85 all providing access to the region, along with many state highways.

The weather of Virginia is often described as "Goldilocks Climate," being not too hot and not too cold. It is a humid, subtropical area with frosty winters and sometimes "sticky" during the height of summer.

Cities Full of History With the Mountains on the Doorstep

Richmond is home to history, arts, antiques, and culture. It is considered to be the birthplace of Black Capitalism with many sites honoring the role of African Americans in shaping the nation. Explore the Maggie L. Walker National Historic Site, the Black History Museum and the L. Douglas Wilder Library.

Charlottesville is a charming, centrally located city in the foothills of the Blue Ridge Mountains; it is a great base for exploring the mountains. It has a wide range of museums, galleries and parks. History-lovers can visit Monticello, home to one of the nation’s best loved founders, Thomas Jefferson. It is also an ideal place for golf-lovers with several championship courses nearby. Set within an area with rivers and lakes, it is perfect for exploring, sailing, swimming and fishing. There are also sports such as kayaking, canoeing and tubing here. It’s a great mixture of adventure and relaxation.

Also in the foothills of the Blue Ridge Mountains is Lynchburg, the city of Seven Hills. Central Virginia lodging is close to a variety of historic sites.

Trips around this region include the Civil War Trails that follow the route of the campaigns and battlefields through Richmond, Petersburg and Appomattox. Here, visitors should stop at the American Civil War Center at Historic Tredegar, the Pamplin Historic Park and National Museum of the Civil War Soldier, and Appomattox Court House and National Historic Park.

Great Shopping, Great Food and Great Fun

The region around Central Virginia vacation rentals is a shopper’s paradise with a huge variety of shopping excursions available. Whether you are looking for antiques, crafts or even a present for a beloved pet, it is all here. The farmers' markets are full of wonderfully fresh, locally grown produce which is great to take back to your Central Virginia lodging for some fabulous meals.

Dining is a real pleasure to be undertaken in Central Virginia, with wonderful regional dishes such as country ham with grits to specialty ethnic restaurants. Perhaps a family buffet in a local diner, a country kitchen serving fried chicken, or a great place for BBQ fits your personal tastes. There is also five-star dining with unique menus and fabulous service in elegant surroundings.

The region is home to a great selection of days trips to zoos and theme parks, including the famous Busch Gardens, Williamsburg and Kings Dominion. Of special interest for children may be the Haunted Monster Museum and Dinosaur Kingdom and the indoor water park at Great Wolf Lodge. For animal-lovers, a trip to Infinity Acres Alpaca Farm is a wonderful opportunity to get up close with these beautiful, gentle animals.
