  • Great Family Area Visit Launch Site - Or Just Destination

"We ended a road trip with a week at Afton Cottage. Having stayed in the Charlottesville area in the past, we had an idea of the places we were going to visit and from the description the cottage seemed like a great fit. It absolutely did not disappoint! It was roomy enough for our family of 4 plus our dog, but still felt cozy. It was well-equipped with all the basics. The laundry room and having plenty of linens and towels for everyone were definite perks - as anyone who has traveled with small children can appreciate! Dick has a binder, which I'll call "the book." It has information on the area from some basics to you-didn't-realize-you-wanted-to-know-until-you-did pieces of info. We visited Monticello, Michie Tavern, Carter Mountain, Blue Mountain Brewery, Devil's Backbone Brewery, the Cidery, a handful of vineyards, Tuckahoe Antique Mall (very reasonable BTW) and did some hiking in Shenandoah and a cute little walking trail in Nellysford. We also visited several of the local shops for produce/local items. Critzer has great produce and fresh eggs and the woman during my visit was super friendly. The heirloom tomatoes are amazing. They're literally across from Blue Mountain Brewery. Definitely worth the quick trip. During the rainy days we were content to stay in and watch movies. On nice days, the deck was perfect for deer watching, coffee in the morning and stars in the evening. Dick popped by to introduce himself and to answer any questions, but didn't impose. Overall, it is a great little retreat! Even our dog had a great time - kicked off by the complementary dog treats waiting for her on arrival! P.S. A previous reviewer mentioned the knives. It seemed like a random comment to me at the time, but boy will you enjoy them if you do any of your own meal prep!"

  • Cozy, off-the-beaten track retreat

"My girlfriend and I stayed at the Squirrel's Nest last weekend and it was a great homebase for our activities in Central VA. The pictures don't do the quality of the design and the cleanliness of the place justice. It's a great place for 2, although it might be a little claustrophobic if you have 4 or more in your party. We loved the loft bedroom and the family room area. Thanks for helping us have a great weekend!"

  • Luxury in Charlottesville

"We cannot stop talking about this house! It was amazing. Beautifully decorated, spacious, quiet, close to the vineyards and had everything we could possibly need. The bed linens were so luxurious and the kitchen was fully stocked with high end cooks tools. I would go back in a heartbeat--and stay longer! Highly recommend."

  • Best Rural Getaway Imaginable

"Getting together with the people you actually care about is so rare and this cabin took that experience to another level. It is a huge space. We spent the entire day in the shade of the back yard or rocking on the porch. Then fire pit set up is amazing. Its sleeps everyone comfortably and has every cooking amenity you would need. I really can't imagine a better place in the area. One person remarked that this cabin is straight out of Pinterest. It was a total summer camp experience, we all bonded, and made memories. It may sound cliche, but this cabin truly made the trip. Can't recommend it enough."
